Urban Decay Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss

user-pic
pocket rocket.jpg

OK yes, Urban Decay's Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss ($19) is totally gimmicky, but I'm finding this gloss hilarious and it's most definitely a conversation starter. Each gloss color comes with a different man on the cap and when you tilt the tube the man is stripped to his undies (front on one side, rear on the other!). I only wish it wasn't creme-brulee-scented and didn't have lip plumping properties. On the plus side the gloss comes with a non-sticky brush applicator (so rare these days), and the shade I tried, David, was high-shine and moisturizing.

New from Hourglass: Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss

user-pic

I went backstage at the La Perla show this season where makeup (including body makeup!), was handled by Hourglass. I've been obsessed with this line ever since I first laid my eyes on their super-sleek packaging. There seriously is nothing comparable on the market (just take a look at their swivel-package shadows that come with their own brush, a rarity nowadays with brands cutting costs any which way they can).  Among the items that were used the most backstage were Prodigy Hydrating Lip Glosses. The glosses just launched at Sephora and I'm liking the dusty rose 'Legend' shade. I have to admit though, it's not the shade that has me this amped, it's the packaging. So architectural and original. It's also easy to grip and even easier to fit into a tiny clutch:)

Lipstick Queen's Fired Up Gloss

user-pic
fired up.JPG I usually opt for a sheer gloss with a bit of a pink tint, hint of purple, and no shimmer, but I couldn't resist trying Lipstick Queen's Fired Up Gloss ($18) when I was offered a sample since it came with this tidbit: it's been proven that women who wear red lipstick, smile more often. I certainly smile more often when I have on red Loubie soles, not sure about lipstick, but hey, we all draw our confidence from different places:-) What certainly made me smile however was that this gloss comes with a brush applicator, meaning it didn't leave my lips sticky and the tube is long, sleek, and slender making it an easy fit for a small purse. Unlike what the color would have you think it really does apply with only a slight hint of red so it's bright without being pin-up bold. The shade just launched and is available online or try out in person at Barneys New York or Henri Bendel.

Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gift Set

user-pic
I'm a sucker for great packaging when it comes to lip gloss because if there's one thing I'm taking out with me, as far as cosmetics go, when I go on a date it's lip gloss. There's nothing like busting out a gloss that gets your date's attention (there's never any harm in drawing attention to your lips!), and aside from Modelco's Lip Lights ($28) which have LED lights in the cap, Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker lip glosses ($24.99 for 3) are the most attention-grabbing. Each gloss has a sparkly cap and the words Sexy Motherpucker emblazonment on the packaging (believe me, you'll get a comment on that if your date notices...!). There are two sets of three available and all the glosses are plumping (so expect a slight tinkle). I was pleasantly surprised that the colors were light on shimmer (my biggest peeve with drugstore lip glosses is that they're usually overly shinny), and color and while they do have a taste, it dissipates quickly. The formulation is slightly sticky, but given the price and packaging they're still a sweet deal. On a side note, Soap & Glory was started by the same woman who founded Bliss and all of the packaging in the line has this kind of fabulously cheeky humor!

stila lip glaze.jpgstile one step.jpgstila yumberry.jpg

Celeb Fave: Rock&Republic Glosses

user-pic

Of course Sandra Bullock would be obsessed with Rock&Republic glosses -- she's married to Jessie James after-all and the brand's glosses are the total poster child for rock meets glam! Their Luxe Lip Glosses ($26) are high on the shine and relatively low on the shimmer and don't apply with too much color so you can easily layer on for as much richness as you like (perfect for those who are looking for a gloss they can wear during the day to the office and out to the clubs at night:-)). My one peeve with the gloss is that I wish it had a brush applicator instead of a sponge one (why is it that so few makeup brands use brushes!?). Sponges always leave my lips a bit sticky, but on the plus side the gloss is long-lasting and the packaging is a serious bonus for me! Simple and sleek, the gloss has a black top with the Rock&Republic logo boldly displayed in thick silver letters on the cap. My fave color is "Sexy Beast" which is a lot lighter than you'd think looking at it. My lips are fairly dark and this color gave them a nice, quick boost of shine, but again you could layer on for more color. Now if only getting my hands on the Rock&Republic 'Stiletto' shoe in my size (come on -- how fun are these!? Dying that they're sold out!), would be as easy as applying this gloss!!

mkhollywood3.jpg I've never really given Estée Lauder much thought until recently; when I was a kid, it was my aunt's favorite (White Linen anyone?) and I always thought of it as the brand for the mature set.  That's all changing, however, under the direction of the very young and very chic Aerin Lauder (I see her at the Oscar show each season and she is so poised and beautiful, no tantrums from her when they ask her to get in line, she stood behind us at the last show!).  The latest collaboration with Michael Kors, Very Hollywood, is a stunning collection of modern palettes in shades of pinks and corals.  Even the packaging has been redesigned with Michael's modern glam sensibilities.

I had the chance to play with the collection a couple of weeks ago at a press event and became obsessed with the Rodeo Pink palette.  I'm happy to report that the lip glosses no longer have a strange scent and are ultra moisturizing and shiny!  I'm not usually a coral girl but this coral is very natural without any tinge of orange-y ness, the entire collection is very neutral and perfect for all skin colors.  Read on for a quick Q & A with Michael Kors!

The collection will be at counters starting in January.  Sign up for Estee Lauder newsletter here to be notified when it becomes available on line.

LORAC Couture Shine Gloss Collection

user-pic
lorac lips.jpg
I feel like LORAC is often somewhat overlooked, because their packaging isn't as flashy as some of the other brands stocked at the likes of Sephora, but when it comes to quality LORAC often comes-out on top (in fact often times when I'm talking to a girlfriend about makeup, especially foundations, LORAC will be mentioned as a favorite). For holiday they've come out with LORAC Couture Shine Gloss Collection -- a $65 value being sold in a cute little box complete with a bow for only $22.50. The glosses are super-cute and compact making them perfect for on-the-go, there's a nice color variety to suit various looks (the darker ones are actually more sheer than they appear), the formulations are fairly non-sticky, and they've got serious staying power. My only complaint is that I wish they had opted for brush instead of sponge applicators.
