Frugal Snob: Killer Holiday Deals from LORAC

user-pic

Last week I met LORAC founder Carol Shaw (she's beyond sweet!), at a small event held at a hotel here in NYC. She told me an a handful of other bloggers about how when she was younger she felt like an "ugly duckling" and that a makeover changed her life; she actually began to tear-up and it was incredibly touching and a true reflection of how false it is when people say "makeup is just makeup." With that in mind, Carol (LORAC is Carol spelled backwards!), made a clear point about how with her holiday kits she tried to give her customers the biggest bang for their buck and boy has she this year! LORAC has a number of limited edition holiday value sets, but the two that stand out most are the LORAC Bejeweled Lip Gloss Collection ($132 value for $25) and the LORAC Bejeweled Day & Night Jewelry Box ($415 value for $56). I love glosses so I was immediately drawn to the gloss set. You get six full-size glosses for only $25! Best of all each of them have a brush -- not a sponge -- applicator and a wide variety of colors are included. The caps are equally adorable and since the glosses are full-size you can take the kit apart and gift the glosses separately if you choose to.

The second gift set comes with two eye liner pencils in dark brown and black, two high-shine lip glosses in rose and peach, a bronzer, a face palette for day with 16 shadows and a blush, and a face palette for night with 16 shadows and a blush. Everything is packaged in a keepsake jewelry box and what's cool about it is that the pieces actually come apart, so you can toss your palette, or your gloss, or your bronzer etc. in your bag without having to lug around the whole big box.

Le_MétierdeBeauté_Crème_Fresh_Tint_Lip_Cheek.pngicon

The older I get, the less make up I wear. During the day, my routine has been paired down to a no-brainer science: tinted sunscreen, a bit of eyeliner, some lip gloss, and Crème Fresh Tint from Le Métier de Beauté. Just a dab of the cream will offer that natural glow to your cheeks or a bitten tint to your lips. Not the least bit sticky or greasy (often a problem with cream blushes), the tint comes in five appealing shades: Coral Nymph, a fresh peach; Ginger Lily, muted mauve; Mystique, lavender-pink; Tenne, berry bronze; and Poppy, rosy pink.

Mystique is my color. Just a quick smudge to the cheeks, and it gives me a healthy flush like I've just run four miles. No layered, caked-on makeup look here. Dewy and polished, sheer and luminous: I love the fact that I can re-apply it throughout the day without the worry of build-up. It's just as good on the lips, and at $28, this versatile and pretty neutral product makes a great gift for your girlfriends. At Nordstromicon for $28.

French Skin Care Investigation by Renée Rouleau: PART DEUX

user-pic

renee_rouleau_luxe_mint_cleansing_gel.png

I recently returned from a trip to Europe where I attended Paris Beauty Week in France, an amazing trade show featuring new innovations in skin care ingredients and technology - a true playground for this esthetician and skin care expert! In addition, I met with clients to consult about their skin, indulged in luxurious French facials and visited my husband's family.

Whenever I am there, I spend a lot of time talking with my French colleagues, clients, friends and family to understand their philosophy about skin. On this recent trip, I came away with some new observations which is an update to my previous post on Beauty Snob. Read: French Skin Care Investigation by Renee Rouleau

-Many French women will only cleanse their skin once a day - instead of twice. The French are all about keeping moisture in the skin and many estheticians will tell their clients that it's not necessary to cleanse the face in the morning since you don't want to wash away your previous night skin treatments.

Personally, I don't believe in this philosophy because as long as you're not washing your face with something harsh, you won't strip the skin of its moisture. Secondly, in order to get the best performance from your daytime antioxidant serums and sunscreen, you need a clean canvas for the products to work their best. And lastly, your skin produces sebum (oil) while you sleep, and oil breeds bacteria resulting in breakouts, which are never a good thing.

Many of the young French women I have spoken with are starting to feel that maybe twice a day cleansing would be more beneficial for their skin, despite what they have always been taught. (Note: I believe the French women are far more diligent than American women about washing their face at night.)

- The French focus is predominately about moisturizing - and less about exfoliation. When I get facials in France, there is very little exfoliation included, because many French estheticians don't believe in it as much American estheticians do. For home care, the French are all about serums, masks, eye creams and moisturizers, and often a facial scrub is an afterthought.

Acid serums are hard to come by in France, whereas they are practically in every U.S. product these days--which is not necessarily good thing. But many French women read American magazines and they see how much attention we put on exfoliation, particularly with professional chemical peels and at-home peels. Especially for those with aging, sun damage, brown spots, lines and wrinkles, clogged pores or blemishes - they realize using a facial scrub once a week is not enough to give them the best results for their skin. Without a doubt, regular use of exfoliants can transform your skin. I believe in a balance when it comes to exfoliation--not too much but definitely not too little.

- French women encourage the concept of "aging gracefully." Unlike many Americans who will fight aging every step of the way, French women have a confidence about their appearance and don't go to extremes to look younger. They simply want to look their best but they work with what they have. I love this about them. At the trade show, I didn't see anyone there, both from exhibitors and attendees, that looked like they had any cosmetic procedures. At U.S. skin care trade shows, you'll definitely see people looking pulled too tight, with big lips and frozen faces.

- Wearing sunscreen daily is not always encouraged - unlike in the United States. A French esthetician told me "You Americans are into that sunscreen thing." And in every facial I have ever had in France, including the ones I had on this recent visit, sunscreen has never been applied to my skin at the conclusion of the facial, even when it's in the middle of the day and the sun is shining. Even at the trade show, I saw very few sunscreens being promoted. My French clients have heard from both me and American magazines that sunscreen should be worn daily and they are starting to adopt this habit. While French skin care products certainly include sunscreens, they just aren't promoted very much by many professionals. It's a shame considering the #1 reason for premature aging is from daily UV exposure. Sunscreen should be worn 365 days a year, rain or shine, and inside and out since damaging rays can come through windows in your home or office.

Without a doubt, the French have been pioneers for facials and the importance of caring for your skin, far earlier than Americans ever were. Being an esthetician in France is a popular and well-respected industry and facial salons are abundant, more so than in the United States. I have learned a lot of great techniques from my French colleagues and I certainly feel many of their philosophies about skin are very valid. In fact, I'm launching some new skin care services and products in 2012 which are all French-inspired. Stay tuned!

What I also know is that our approaches to skin care can be quite different and each person needs to decide what is best for them based on the results they want to achieve. At the end of the day, what's important is how you feel about your skin when you look in the mirror. And my wish for you is healthy, glowing and beautiful skin - no matter which philosophy you may subscribe to.

Renée Rouleau is a skin care expert & celebrity esthetician who believes there's more to skin than the one-size-fits-all approach. Her exclusive skin care line is based on nine unique skin types, rather than the standard--dry, normal and oily. Bel Mondo Anti-Aging Bio Cellulose Mask: Beautiful World, Beautiful Face

user-pic

Bel_Mondo_Anti_Aging_BioCellulose_Mask.png

I'm always wary of brands I've never heard of (especially when my face is involved!), but this anti-aging mask is a MUST-TRY! If you want a spa experience-level, deeply hydrating facial, this at-home treatment is as close as you can get to booking a session.

For my first try, I carefully read the ingredients, tested it on my arm, and waited an hour before swathing my face. I found it best to lie down for about twenty minutes and relax.

The Bel Mondo Anti-Aging Bio Cellulose mask consists of three layers (with a gelatin-like feel) that calm, hydrate, and soothe the skin. The key to its effectiveness is the algae extract, containing trace elements, nutrients, and amino acids that are deeply penetrating and enriching. Keratin and hyaluronic acid help firm and plump, and ceramide builds a moisture barrier for your skin. After one treatment, my face was tight, toned, and glowing all day. Unfortunately, it didn't last more than that one luminous day. So, buy a single sheet if you don't want to commit to the entire box, since it is very expensive. But do try it - it sure beats the price of the spa! At Bel Mondo for $22 (for a single mask) or $90 (for five masks).

Warren-Tricomi Tension Hair Brush: Some Healthy Tension

user-pic

Warren_Tricomi_Tension_Hair_Brush.png

I love my stylist; he does such a good job blowing out my hair. I always try to learn his tricks when he does it, but the advantage I'll never have? The leverage he gets from standing over me. Getting the right tension with the brush is key, but it's not easy to do yourself.

Or so I thought I could never have leverage. Warren-Tricomi's Tension brush allows you, yes, the proper tension while doing your own hair - you need it so you can blow-dry it while the cuticles are all facing one direction. With this nifty brush, two sides clamp together, so you get that perfectly smooth texture your stylist achieves. If you're all about straightening your hair, there is no better tool out there (be gone with irons!), as a regular brush will just leave you with flyaways.

I have straight hair to begin with and even for me, attaining a perfectly straight blowout is a challenge: a regular brush lacks the right grip and the ends inevitably get blown all over the place. With the Tension brush, you can even give your ends some flip by turning it. A word of warning: do not use this on dry hair or you will get crazy static. And you do need to grab it tight, so it is a bit of a workout. But no pain, no gain, right? At CVS for $15.

Soap & Glory Comes to Sephora

user-pic

It was such a bummer when Soap & Glory stopped being sold at Target. The line is not only affordable, but effective (it was started by the founder of Bliss Spa), and the packaging/names of the products are killer. Admittedly, mostly because of the name, my favorite product in the line is the Sexy Mother Pucker gloss ($15). About two years ago I got my friend a five-pack after she broke up with her boyfriend and let me tell you it's one of the best things you can give a girl when she needs some cheering-up! Mid last month the entire Soap & Glory range hit Sephora stores and online...yay! It's the first time the full range of products is available in the U.S. and I was glad to see that it remains an affordable and cheeky line despite the change in retailer.

The last product I would have thought to try from the line would be the floral mist - how could a floral mist smell anything, but cheap I thought? Let me tell you, if you're the kind of person who likes to spritz your body with something fragrant in the morning, get your hands on Mist You Madly ($18). The fragrance takes a few seconds to develop so spray it two-three times and wait a few seconds. It honestly smells fantastic - like fresh flowers, but not in a "grandma way," rather in an invigoratingly refreshing way. It layers well too. I've been wearing it with Cartier Baiser Vole and they work great together.

Michael_Kors_Very_Hollywood_LipGloss_Rollerball_EaudeParfum_Duo.png

This is genius! A lip gloss touch-up with a perfume roller on the other tip! But a word of advice for this magic wand: don't try this in a dark bar or club - you don't want to dab gloss behind the ears and roll perfume on your lips! Pay attention to which end is which and you can stay shiny and smelling sweet with a couple quick swipes, wherever your night takes you. Like it or not, perfume tends to fade over the course of a day, so this refresher is a no-brainer. And since you're toting lip gloss anyway, why not spritz if you can? Especially when your to-go scent smells as good as Michael Kors' eau de parfum, infused with neroli, black currant, and mandarin. This deluxe duo, out of Kors' Very Hollywood collection, is the "why didn't I think of that?" item that makes perfect sense! At Sephora.com for $22.

Bobbi Brown Holiday 2011 Collection: Let's Get This Party Started

user-pic

bobbi_brown_ultimate_party_mix.png

Some don't get in the holiday spirit until festive songs start playing on the radio. I, on the other hand, know that special time of year is here when Bobbi Brown releases her annual limited-edition holiday collection! And nothing says bring out the sequins like her latest line, perfect for stuffing in the stockings of fellow beauty snobs or granting yourself a little late-autumn pick-me-up. Some glimmer, some shimmer, and your face will thank you come party time!

bobbi_brown_party_classic_to_go_pallete.png

The party starts - and doesn't stop - with the Ultimate Party Collection ($65), an exciting double-decker compact of eight eye shadows, crafted to bring a twinkle to your eyes and four fresh, glittering lip shades, all designed to be blended and personalized with the provided mini brushes. Too much fiesta for you? Take your party on the move with the Party To Go ($25) (shining with metallics) and Classic To Go ($25) (year-round matte neutrals) palettes - three eye shadows and two lip colors is all you really need.

bobbi_brown_party_classic_to_go_pallete1.png

All about eyes? Bobbi is all about options. Go from daytime-casual to night-on-the-town in just a few strokes of a brush with the Cool Party ($45) and Party ($45) eye palettes (an array of shades from icy ivory to warm amber). Or turn up the heat with the Black Ruby Sparkle palette ($45). Shades of dusty rose and warm burgundy wine make this one a seasonal winner in my book.

bobbi_brown_lip_gloss_trio_ruby.png

Finish off your lips with a swipe of gloss from the Lip Gloss Trio ($38), a group of Bobbi's favorite shades: Aubergine, Bare Sparkle, and Pastel Pink. Now that your face is all dressed up, I hope you have somewhere to go!

deborah_lippman_stripper_to_go.pngicon

Every girl needs "The Stripper to Go" in her beauty arsenal! Seriously, I'm buying this for all my girlfriends. We have all used the nail polish remover that comes on a pad (I keep them in my travel bag for polish emergencies), but this is no acetone-soaked pad. It's different and it's genius.

Nail hero Deborah Lippman has devised a little mitt form-fitted for your finger to fit inside perfectly. It has grip so you don't have to strain your fingers to keep it from sliding around while you work the polish off. Just slip your fingers into the mitt and twist them back in forth; since it covers the entire fingertip, you can even get the edges where your nails and cuticles meet.

Who knew a lavender remover could be so powerful? It says one mitt cleans all ten nails. I was skeptical, especially since I had on Lippman's Billionaire polish (super-dark), but lo and behold, it did an exceptional job. Even the cuticles were bare and clean, an incredible feat considering I have dry cuticles. The essential lavender also helps with the scent; it's not bad, like your average remover that makes your nose bleed with its fumes (I wouldn't say it smells fantastic, but lavender makes it much better). It even contains aloe vera and glycerin, leaving your fingers conditioned and not dried out.

Amazing stuff. This is going to be a permanent item in my beauty closet from now on. At Nordstromicon for $12.
