Tips for Hydrated and Healthy Scalp and Hair

Rene Furterer.jpg
My skin suffers because of how dry it gets in the winter, but so does my hair and scalp! Thankfully I got some fabulous tips from the folks at Rene Furterer and Klorane that I wanted to share with you:) First, use a humidifier -- if there is one that can do the trick it's Air-O-Swiss ($229.99), though one might not be enough if your room is very big, which is what I realized my problem was -- sometimes you need two humidifiers! Then, treat the scalp once a week to a purifying massage with Rene Furterer Complexe 5 Regenerating Extract ($45). Massaging the scalp with Complexe 5's essential oils of orange and lavender naturally stimulate the scalp's circulation and create the optimal conditions for the scalp and hair to thrive as well as allowing better penetration of your other hair care products. As far as shampooing people always do it too much -- including me -- so hard for me to take my daily shower and stop myself from reaching over for the shampoo and conditioner, but as we all know that's bad! Too much shampooing can strip the scalp and hair of its natural protective oils. By shampooing a bit less frequently, you'll give your scalp a chance to maintain its natural balance. To keep hair clean and beautiful between shampoos, you can use a dry shampoo such as Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk ($18) that cleanses your hair without stripping it. I have to say I get eecked by dry shampoos and had bad experiences previously with one from T3, but as far as they go the one from Klorane was actually soothing. More after the Jump!

Séva Style Hair Care

KitImage.jpgI've been coming across countless wonderful beauty gift sets and like Beauty Snob Tina I ended-up getting a few of my faves for most of the people on my shopping list this holiday season! One that stand-outs when it comes to hair care is the gift set from Seva . Seva means "thread" in Sanskrit which the company says implies that all things are connected...nice little holiday message, huh?! Anyway, Seva is a new line of hair care products and they use some of the highest quality ingredients for their products. The line is also sulfate and paraben free, vegan and not tested on animals and given their ingredients Seva hair products are 100% color safe which is essential for me because I only get my hair highlighted twice a year and both times it's abroad (either at Dessange in France or with a German colorist when I go visit my family in Munich), so I gotta keep my highlights safe!! The products are wonderfully light so they won't leave your hair heavy or overly greasy. Plus, all Seva items are produced locally in Los Angeles and their warehouse employs people with disabilities from the La Puente Adult School. With that in mind, check-out the Seva Gift Set which retails for $75 (a $160 value), and comes with all of the products from the Seva line.

Neil George makes me want to wash my hair daily!

I don't like to wash my hair every day and I pride myself in the twice weekly shampoo system I've been on for years. Day One-- I blow dry or get a blow out, Day Two-- I use a straightening iron or hot curlers, and if you see me in a ponytail-- it's day Three. This has enabled me a full head of shiny and very healthy hair; at least that's what everyone tells me anyway. Plus I've yet to find a shampoo gentle enough to use daily without giving me split ends. Last week, I started using Neil George "Every Day Cleanse" and "Every Day Moisture" and I found myself looking forward to shampooing my hair, every day. My hair was really clean without feeling stripped and it was conditioned without heaviness or oiliness. Trust me, I have dozens of shampoos and conditioners in my shower and this is one of the best I've tried and it's not as expensive as it feels. I am now excited to try the illuminating shampoo and conditioner when I take the leap and highlight my hair as well as the mask.  Oh the joys of new discoveries!  It's so fun being a girl!  All at Beauty.com.

Philosophy Pumpkin Pie GUILT FREE Goodness!!

"Pumpkin, spice, and everything nice collide..."

Its that time of year again...The time when you already feel guilty for the food you haven't even eaten yet!! Not very long ago, I was watching a show on the discovery channel about courtship practices around the world. The specific episode that has remained fresh in my memory was about a family in Africa that was getting the eldest daughter ready for marriage, by feeding her AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!! Seriously, they weighed her when she began, and then monitored her weight gain for the next few weeks- literally feeding her cream and butter to increase her 'value'!! ...I'm a little jealous. In America weight is a controversial topic. Regardless of what side of the scale you weigh in on, here are two holiday treats we can all enjoy- Guilt Free!! If you haven't tried Philosophy products yet, you either need to. Ever delicious product that comes out of the Philosophy Kitchen ...err, Lab, smells exactly like what it claims to be. Many times I have had to stop myself from dipping a finger into my Cinnamon Buns Shampoo and taking a big lick! I digress- Pumpkin Spice Muffin Lip Shine is a great way to enjoy everyones favorite holiday dessert, zero calories! And what better way to get you into the holiday spirit then lathering up with Pumpkin Spice Muffin Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath?

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Shampoo & Conditioner

1.jpgI was telling a friend about Om Aroma's Luxe Collection when she mentioned using Alterna's Caviar Anti-Aging Seasilk Shampoo and Conditioner . They come in either moisturizing or volumizing varieties -- I've been using the moisturizing shampoo and conditioner these past few weeks and I have to say I love the fresh, light smell (green tea and bergamot), and it leaves my hair manageable even when I go to bed with my hair still wet. What really sets this line apart however is the fact that it contains Seasilk to tackle aging hair. Aging hair doesn't only refer to actual age, it also refers to the damage caused by sun, pollutants, the environment and chemical aggressors, which can leads to brittle, lackluster hair that's coarse and difficult to manage or style. The Seasilk helps prevent future signs of aging while imparting a healthy shine:) The Caviar Anti-Aging Shampoos with Seasilk retails for $30 while the Caviar Anti-Aging Conditioners with Seasilk retails for $32. Check-out the luxe line here!

Kerastase Paris for damaged ends

keratesse.jpgBeing in the pool and ocean all summer has made my hair dry and though it's not damaged, I fear it is a mere matter of time. So I am testing out different brands to see how my hair responds. This week I am testing out Kerastase-- a brand long known for luxury haircare (though the parent company is L'Oreal, and I've always wondered how different it is from its drugstore counterpart). I got the Kerastase Creme Richesse because I was told it was the best of the bunch. After using it for a week, my hair doesn't feel healed, it just feels heavy and greasy. So disappointing considering all that I've heard and read about the line. Soleil Sun Exposed at Kerastase.com.

What measures are you taking to reverse the damage to your hair from surf and sun?

Alternate Use for Conditioner - Shaving Cream!

conditioners.jpg

This is a picture I took in my shower, these are reminent bottles of unused and half used conditioner.  The problem is, my husband doesn't use conditioner and he washes his hair everyday whereas I wash it every other day so the shampoo to conditioner usage ratio is totally thrown off.  So when I read somewhere that conditioner makes for a good shaving cream, I was all over it!  I immediately went to shave my legs using conditioner that I know I will never use on my hair, and guess what?  It works remarkably well.  Conditioner is full of oils so it is the perfect lubricant but if you think about it, it makes total sense because it softens the hair so when you shave, it is less coarse and easier on the razor.  It also leaves your legs super soft and polished.  I mean, yes, you do need to rinse well so it is a bit more work but if you are shaving in the shower, it is not a problem at all.  I still have quite a few years before this additional use will deplete my overloaded supply but at least I won't have to buy special shaving cream anymore!
