Thakoon - Spring 2010

image2.jpgimage3.jpgimage.jpg

Thakoon's spring collection is described as "warrior-surf" and reflects a hard/soft, natural/artificial dichotomy with organic construction or armoring of the body, contrasting with patterns cut around the body as a canvas with soft draping. To achieve this "sumo wrestler meets surfer" inspired look, Thakoon Panichgul, Eugene Souleiman, and Eva Scrivo collaborated for a finished style that demonstrates the contrast between tight and loose elements, which the collection encapsulates.  A sleek, tight-to-the-head "seventh samurai" ponytail is sculpted on the top half, while leaving out loose, textured ends in a knot.  This is a very cool look for day or evening, jump for instructions!

HerCut: Style vs. Type

| Leave Comment
landing.gif
When I first heard about HerCut my reaction was "I can't believe this hasn't been done before!" The new line of hair care products was developed to target specific hair cuts vs hair types, so there's a styling product for those with a 'Bob,' 'Pixie,' 'Long Layers,' 'Shag,' and the 'Blunt'. Isn't that cool!?? I mean isn't our hair first and foremost defined by our cut? Yes, texture plays a big role and for those of you who think this could be a problem (after all you can have long curly layers or stick straight ones), HerCut's shampoos and conditioners are type rather than cut-specific which helps give hair texture the specific treatment it needs. The style-specific styling products work similar to Biore's Dual Fusion Moisturizer in that when you press for it to dispense, clear and cream parts come-out for dual action. The styling products, which HerCut calls Catalysts, retail for $28, while their shampoos and conditioners go for $22. I think the idea for this line is fab and as long as you stick with a shampoo and conditioner that targets your hair type (ie try, normal, oily...), their catalysts are a great way to make the most of your cut.

Would you try a line that treats hair based on your hair style?

New from Living Proof No Frizz

Pretty much every Sephora in NYC has a big stand with Living Proof products smack dab in the middle when you first walk in. Clearly there's something to this line. First off the packaging is smooth and compact (the outside is coated with something that feels like rubber). Then there's the smell which is light, refreshing, and completely unobtrusive and lastly, there's the fact that the line actually works! I've been using a mix of MoroccanOil for my hair tips and Living Proof Straight Making No Frizz Styling Spray for Fine to Medium Hair for my root and mid-hair sections post showering when my hair is damp and my frizz has been, for the most part, under control even amidst the nasty sticky weather. Now things have gotten even easier because Living Proof has launched a shampoo and conditioners. Each product has been developed to address the dryness and damage often associated with hair prone to frizz. More after the jump!

Celeb Snob: Amy Adams Coast to Coast

amyadams809.jpg Have you seen "Julie & Julie" yet?  It's about a food blogger who basically stalks Julia Childs (who was said to be annoyed before her passing) and decides to try every 524 recipes in Julia's cookbook "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in 365 days!  The fabulous Amy Adams plays the food obsessed Julie (with Meryl Streep as Julia Child).  We asked Matrix celebrity hairdresser, Mark Townsend, how he created Amy's looks from coast to coast on the red carpet!  He tells us he wanted Amy's hair to be modern and glamorous to match her Carolina Herrera gown for the New York premiere. (Jump to read how he achieved this look!)

I like her hair at the LA premiere better.  amyadams8091.jpgThe smooth and chic style is very flattering for her gorgeous read hair and she looks 10 years younger. "For the Los Angeles screening of 'Julie & Julia,' I was inspired by beauty shots from the 80s that I've collected over the years, very Carol Alt," Townsend comments.  Strangely, she does kinda resemble Carol Alt with this hair.

beer.jpgKayla Fioravanti RA, Chief Formulator and co-founder of Essential Wholesale shared some wonderful insight with us on everyday items in our kitchens that may be used for adding softness and shine to our hair.

Who knew when my boyfriend told me his hair felt soft the day after getting splattered with beer that he was actually on to something??  Read on!

· Baking soda works wonders in your hair. While your hair is dry before you take a shower, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a cup of warm water, mix thoroughly and work it into your hair by hand and with a comb. Then jump in the shower and rinse it out.

· Salt is the secret to that windblown messy hair look that many people strive for. The salt dries in your hair and leaves it full bodied and sexy. You can get the same look by adding a tablespoon of salt to 4 oz of water in an empty spray bottle. After washing and conditioning your hair simply spray salt solution over hair and allow to air dry.

T3 Evertwirl for Wild Child Hair!

t3evertwirl.jpg

If you are too lazy to follow my routine for wavy hair, there is an even faster solution (albeit an expensive one) that won't damage your hair.  T3's latest addition to its line of luxury hair styling products is the Evertwirl, a curling iron that claims to curl even the straightest of strands. Made of the same Tourmaline and Silver blend as its Flat iron, the barrel infusion gives quick, long-lasting curls while leaving hair shiny, smooth, frizz-free and totally healthy-looking. I only use T3 hairdryers and flat irons and plan to add this to my arsenal of hair beautifying products. There are two sizes, 1" or 1.25" depending on your hair length, both are $89-- Get the T3 Evertwirl here!

Demi Moore: Should she take the dare?

demicut.jpgAshton Kutcher played a trick on his 2 million+ twitter followers with this photoshopped photo of wifey Demi Moore yesterday. He later tweeted "I'm just playing baby but I think you'd look great with that cut" after she playfully threatened him with her own buzzer to give him a similar cut. It's really fun following them on twitter, they are so cute with their constant banter (Ashton Kutcher is brilliant-- he showed a twitpic photo of his wifey's half naked bum a few months ago).

Demi would look good bald (as we saw in G.I. Jane) but should she take the mohawk plunge a la Rihanna? What do you think?

Wild Sexy Hair in minutes!

tresemmespraygel.jpgI am all about wild child wavy hair this summer!  A tumbling head of waves is just so sexy and carefree but to curl my entire head of stick straight hair with a curling iron is time consuming not to mention damaging to the hair shaft (in the 90s I actually got a spiral perm-- I do not recommend perming Asian hair unless you like the look of crispy noodles).  After a few hit and misses, I've developed my own wavy hair routine with minimum damage to my hair.  This routine takes only 10 minutes (air drying will take longer):

1. Spray wet hair with Tresemme 24 hour body scupting gel (Tres important cuz this will hold the shape of your curls!)

2. Separate hair in 3 horizontal rows and hold top portions up and out of the way with a clip.

fingercurls6.jpg3.  Take 1.5" sections of hair and twirl each piece with finger, pin up in a knot with bobby pin at scalp (repeat until all of your hair is pinned up.  I do 3 curls on bottom row, 4 curls in middle row and about 3-4 curls on top of head.  This takes about 5 minutes (sometimes I leave my hair like this all day, it looks very island chic.)

4. Let hair dry while you do your make up, run errands or whatever you need to!  (You can air dry or use the T3 Evolution Blow dryer for a few minutes)

5.  Take out the bobby pins and finger comb through and fluff hair (spray on hair spray if necessary.)

Et Voila!  A head of gorgeous waves!  So easy and so fast!  Jump for photo!

Beauty Snob Secret: "Essential Women" Organic Oil

essentialwomen.jpgWhat I'm about to share with you may put me out of business but the true secret to my glowing skin, shiny hair and tough nails is a spoonful a day of the 'secret' oil I've been taking for years-- "Essential Women" Organic Oil from Barleans. Okay, so my creams and serums have a lot to do with it, too, but I swear this oil makes a huge difference! I went 6 months without taking it as an experiment and my skin was noticeably less supple (at least to me) and my 'monthly' cramps were unbearable!  You'd have to talk to my hubby about my mood swings but when I told him about stopping the oil as an experiment he offered to buy me a case of it.  I started taking the oil again 4 months ago and am happy to report all is well in my body again (I still have raggy moods, hello it's not a miracle oil.)

"Essential Women" is derived from seeds of botanical flowers such as evening primrose and flax, as well as special plant phytonutirents that not only make women beautiful, but help balance our hormones and make us sane (or I should say less insane) during PMS, menopause and other female issues.

I'm telling you, got get yourself a bottle immediately-- or the soft gel if you are traveling. I prefer the oil cuz I hate swallowing pills and only take it on trips. I mix a spoonful of the oil each morning into my yogurt or soy milk and don't even taste it!   Don't worry, there is no fishy taste that so many other omega oils have. The Essential Woman is the first product of it's kind to combine a full compliment of therapeutically beneficial nutrients targeted for the special and changing needs of a woman. 8 oz bottle is $18.95 and lasts about a month if taken daily. 12 oz bottle is $27.37. 60ct bottle of gel caps is $14.95 and 120 count bottle is $28.47. Buy "Essential Women" oil here.

Special tip
: during that time of the month, double the dosage to two spoonfuls a day, I rarely get cramps or any kind of bloating!

Suggested Use: One tablespoon daily. May be taken straight, mixed with yogurt or cottage cheese, in oatmeal or as an ingredient in salad dressings, protein drinks or blended beverages.
