Photos from style.com

This year's Met Ball was all about the models (the theme was "Model as Muse"),  and we got the low-down on how to get the look of two of the big-name models that attended this year's star-studded affair -- Vanessa Traina and Michelle Aalves. Celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin did supermodel Michelle Alves' pretty, natural makeup. He accentuated her eyes with Lancôme Color Design Eyeshadow Quad in Haute Sunset, a palette of neutral, peachy and beige shades. To create definition, he lined Alves' eyes with Lancôme Le Crayon Khôl in Noir and added a few coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara in Black. A dusting of Lancôme Blush Subtil in Miel Glace was applied to the apples of her cheeks and Daniel used Color Design Lipstick in Love It and Color Fever Gloss in Rose Jolie to create her high-shine, pink pout. Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm

omorovicza_thermalcleansebalm.png

This is one of those things that when you see it you just have to try it. This Cleansing Balm looks like black mud but it is not a mask, it dissolves into an oil that thoroughly cleans your skin and leaves your skin moisturized and enriched with minerals and vitamins. It is made of Hungarian thermal mud and Hungarian healing water, which are both rich in minerals and allows a deep pore cleanse, drawing out all the gunk and impurities. And it takes off makeup like you would not believe. You start on the cheeks and work in a circular motion to break down the balm, once it is oily, you work it up to your eyes and it will remove anything you have on, including stubborn waterproof mascara. This is meant as a one step process, you clean your face with this and wipe, not wash, it off leaving all the oils and minerals behind as a treatment for the skin. The instructions says to wash with water but the SA told me to leave it on. I don't like the idea of makeup traces left behind, so I am opting for the wash with water route. Everything about this is really incredible and I highly recommend it, except, it is really pricey, a jar of this stuff is $102 and if you wear makeup everyday, or even if you don't and just want to use this daily, you can go through this in a month. Exclusively at Neiman Marcus.

orlanecinderellaeffect.jpgToday is my wedding anniversary-- 8 magical years and a beautiful son later, we're still blissfully happy (okay so we fight like all couples do but it never lasts more than 5 minutes and I always win-- I think my hubby has finally figured out the key to happily ever after ;). We are going out to a romantic dinner tonight and I have my schedule carefully planned out-- have our 4 year old son fed and bathed before the baby sitter arrives plus be dressed and ready myself.  I've developed a quick but efficient beauty routine with the aid of the amazing brightening system from Orlane called Absolute Radiance pack, it has everything I'll need to have my complexion glowing as brightly as the first day we met-- all in 7 minutes!  It felt like a science project at first but once I got the hang of it, it's been really easy to give myself this mini facial while I dry my hair!  Here are the 3 easy steps:

1. Apply eye gel under eyes, cover with eye patch
2. Mix powder into cream pack and let foam for 30 seconds, apply Glowing Skin Masque and let sit for 5 minutes (while eye patch is still on, you apply the mask around it).
3. Rinse and apply Evanescent Cream et voila, the skin of a 25 year old.

I swear it is pure perfection!  Make up goes on smoother and your complexion will seriously glow!  $200 at Neiman Marcus.

What about you, do you have any quick tips and tricks to perfect skin before date night?

I had the chance to ask Ramy Gafni --Celebrity Makeup Artist and Eyebrow Guru -- what he thought about the above celebrity photos. See below for what the expert had to say about Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Garner, and Jennifer Connelly's eye brows along with some tips for achieving the right brow shape!
Ramy Gafni: What I see when I look at these photos of Jennifer Garner, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Connelly is that your facial shape (round, oval, heart shaped or square) does not determine your brow shape. Some people are born with a thicker eyebrow, like Jennifer Connelly, and some with a less strong brow, like Jennifer Garner. The key is to take the brows you're born with and shape them into the most flattering shape for your individual facial type.

* A round face looks best with a stronger, straighter eyebrow which can add needed angles to a round face.

* An oval face looks best with a medium fullness and classic arch.

* A long face looks best with a stronger, higher arch.

* A square face looks best with a slightly rounder arch to add needed softness.

The above are just guidelines, however, as you have to take into account not just your facial shape, but also how thick or thin your "virgin" eyebrows are to begin with, how dense or sparse your brow hairs are, the size and shape of your eyes, how close set or far apart your eyes are, your age and finally, what look you are trying to achieve. More after the jump!

lamerpowder2.jpgThe weather has recently turned muggy and every time I leave the house I feel like my face is melting off.  This is why in the summer months I like to switch to a lightweight powder foundation; it's easier to touch up and doesn't feel like I'm clogging my pores.  La Mer just came out with an amazingly lightweight powder foundation-- I got it last week and am in love with it!  You can control the coverage depending on how much you apply it and of course being La Mer it also includes skin treatment benefits along with SPF protection.  I love the way the texture of this powder; super soft and fine, and it feels like nothing on the skin no matter how often I re-apply!

A signature Radiant Ferment (no idea what that is but sounds like yogurt) continuously improves clarity and brightness to illuminate the skin. I was told there are airspun seaborne particles in it (again, no idea but am picturing foam bubbles from the ocean waves) - some of the lightest materials on earth - and that's what makes the flawless finish last all day no matter how much I sweat.  I slapped some of this on before running to my kickboxing session the other day and it held up really well.  I was even able to reapply afterwards without it gunking up.

The Treatment Powder Foundation SPF 15 is $95 and available now at select Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and www.lamer.com

Amazing Argan Oil from Josie Maran

josiemaranoil.jpgI'll admit it, when I first heard of Josie Maran's line of products I did not plan to try or buy anything (I know, such the beauty snob huh?!?).  But then I got a sample of the Argan Oil and have decided re-form my opinion on models turned beauty entrepreneurs.  This legendary, lightweight oil, grown organically in Morocco, is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids but does not feel sticky as a lot of E oils do.  I used it this morning as a moisturizer (absorbs amazingly fast) and then used it all over my body from head to toe (including my cuticles) and split ends. For a mom who does not have a lot of time in the morning, this is almost a miracle product.  My skin has had a subtle glow all day but I don't feel greasy.

Best part is it's 100% organic!  Housed in a recyclable glass bottle with an easy to use applicator, I even used it on my son's rash and the redness went away almost immediatley.  The only drawback is the scent, it stinks.  But god is it good.  Just make sure you spritz on some perfume afterwards.  $48 at Josiemaran.com

YSL Master Class with Val Garland

DSC00484.JPGVal Garland, the Artistic Adviser for YSL Makeup, only comes to Saks NYC once a year so I was ecstatic about the opportunity to meet her and attend her Master Class (even at 8:30am!). Garland introduced a host of YSL's signature products along with the new summer looks. While Garland demonstrated how to apply all the products on a model (on the left), Johnny Burnais -- the Business Manager for YSL at Saks - helped show me what products worked best for my skin tone and how to apply them. Ladies, if you are ever, ever, EVER at Saks NYC you must stop by the YSL counter and ask for Burnais he is absolutely wonderful -- friendly, funny, but most of all honest and he knows the YSL line in and out (plus Bravo junkies, you'll recognize him from Tim Gunn's Guide to Style!). He showed me a bunch of products and two major stand-outs were YSL's Top Secret ($52) and their Touche Eclat ($40, this is YSL's biggest seller -- one is sold every 10 seconds!). Top Secret is great for an instant remedy for tired skin (think early mornings, when you get off a plane...) or for when, for example, you're going to the gym and don't feel like wearing makeup. It works instantly -- you'll immediately see that your skin has a radiance to it and feels baby soft. Top Secret is moisturizing, but it works best layered over a moisturizer. Leaf & Rusher Derma Roller System

leafandrusher_TxRoller.pngleafandrusher_active_serum.png

I saw this roller thing at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills and without thinking I touched the roller not knowing it was full of really tiny and really sharp pins! It didn't hurt or anything when I got pricked but I was startled. Of course I had to ask what it was for. The Leaf & Rusher line is developed by a plastic surgeon and nurse from a Beverly Hills practice, their clintele is a long list of A-lister celebrities who do the advertising for them because they do not. Their Active Serum
($118) contains Retinol and Vitamin C to improve the surface of the skin but when used with the Derma Roller ($118), it penetrates the skin 4000% more than with just a topical application. Makes sense to me. So you apply the serum first, then lightly roll the Derma Roller over the entire face avoiding the eye area. The 90 surgical grade pins pushes the serum into the skin but because our skin is super thin, the pins are actually very very short so it will not hurt or cause bleeding. I was rolling it all over my hand and although it did not feel good, it also did not hurt and I imagine with regular use it will no longer bother me. Very interesting, right? I am pretty sure I can benefit from this roller with any type of serum or even a glycolic peel, although don't take my word for it, I am no doctor. Just telling you what I plan on doing =)

Frugal Snob: Drugstore Deal-- Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse

maybellinedreamliquidmousse.jpgWant perfect looking skin without spending a fortune? Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse Airbrush Finish is damn near perfect! I never would have even given this a thought had I not seen it on my friend Melinda. She had just arrived home from Florida and I thought her glow was due to the fresh ocean air and being outdoors but she informed me it rained the entire trip and she didn't get to spend much time in the sun. I asked her why she was glowing and she gleefully told me "it's the new Maybelline foundation! I bought it because the model in the ad looked so good" (note to advertisers, your expensive models are paying off!). Now my friend is a very advanced Beauty Snob-- she is a hard core beauty junkie (her monthly Neiman bill can attest to this) and she does not hesitate to spend thousands of dollars on a jar of cream if she likes it. So I was shocked to hear she bought a bottle of $9 foundation and even more shocked to find out that she uses it more often than her $150 bottle of cream foundation!

Of course I had to investigate even though I had my doubts and fear (will the cheap foundation make me break out? will the color match? and how will I know what color to choose since there are no samples?). I ended up buying Nude beige in 3.5-- it looked most neutral in the bottle. I went home and washed my face and applied without much expectation.  The minute I pumped the first drop, however, I knew this was good stuff.  The consistency is smooth and lightweight (I didn't even need to blend with moisturizer!) and it left the most amazing velvety texture. I am not saying I'll replace my Chanel, Chantecaille or Cle de peau cream foundations but let me just say this is one heck of a foundation for the price point! I even used it on my photo shoot in LA last week. Jump to see photo--

Responsible Skincare: Amala

| Leave Comment
amalaskincare.jpg ama la yogurt mask.jpgI have enjoyed researching organic skin care for Earth Day, and learning more than I care to know about the harmful effects of the chemicals I've been using :(

Amala skincare came across my path recently and I am very impressed with its line of certified organic products. Formulated with only whole plant ingredients, sourced from fair trade farm partners across the world. There's absolutely zero artifice in this brand and packaging is designed with recycled materials and soy-based inks. Five percent of their net profits are also donated to farm partners.

There are four collections:
- Hydrate (with jasmine) - for dry skin
- Purify (with blue lotus) - for oily/acnegenic skin
- Rejuvenate (with cocoa bean) - for mature skin
- Detoxify (with myrtle) -

But I don't really follow rules and I mix and match different products from each collection.  Here is the

Beauty Snob Amala Routine: Scrub, Yogurt Mask, Collagen Mask- Instant firm and glowing skin.

Amala is available at Barney's New York here.

I love the hydrating Yogurt mask, it gives my skin moisture without making it feel heavy or greasy.  $58 at Barneys.

Hard Night, Good Morning-- Awaken to Beautiful Skin

hardnightgoodmorning.jpgI have had my share of hard nights-- in my 20's it was from dancing all night, but now in my 30's it was mostly from my son. Teething, fevers, stomach bugs, ear infections, you name it and he's gotten it since starting pre-school at age 3. But I can't blame him for all of my hard nights. There are the few occasions when I'm working in NYC and have to stay up late at events (I know, such torture to have to attend parties, right?). You all should know the effects of hard nights-- dry skin that lacks luster.

Well now there is a serum specifically created to tone, tighten and firm skin that's taken a beating. D'Andra's "Hard Night, Good Morning" is an aloe based formula that contains tighterners, antioxidants and essential oils-- just the answer to leave skin looking flawless and fresh-- especially after a late night with too many cocktails! Just don't expect it to cure your headache in the morning. The Serum is $155 here.

Intraceutical Facial at the Ritz Carlton Spa

Spa Healing Waters.jpgSpa Treatment Room.jpg
madonnaoxygen.jpgWhat do Madonna, Molly Sims, Eva Longoria, Justin Timberlake and Beauty Snob have in common? No no no, we don't all love dancing on tables (though I can not speak for Madonna)-- we are all obsessed with Intraceutical facials

I am not one to pass up a new experience so I booked the Intraceutical facial at The Ritz Carlton spa in Dallas last week. I love the Ritz, my friends, hubby and I often dine at Fearings and we love sitting outside in the summer time. It's the only place in Dallas that makes me feel as if I were back in LA.  I was given the royal treatment upon arrival (all guests at the Ritz Spa there are pampered to the max)-- after changing, I took a few minutes in the quiet room-- I am obsessed with that room! There are twin sized beds in there with sheer fabric between each one so you can still chat with a friend or just take a quick nap. I didn't have time to nap as the Intraceuticals skin technician (Katherine Park-- who has amazing velvety skin) came to fetch me at 11am sharp.  I was a bit skeptical of the hype at first, I mean how good can an oxygen facial be?  How about looking like you sleep for 12 hours a night even after a long Easter weekend of sugar and champagne?!?!?  The crazy thing is, my skin continued to glow long after the treatment!  (jump for more!)

Pangea = Beauty + Nature!

| Leave Comment
pangea.jpg In all my years of being obsessed with beauty products nothing comes even close to how much I LOVE Pangea. Seriously I can't think of a person who has come to my apartment that I haven't gone on and on about this line to! It's completely genius. The packaging is planteable! Soak the packaging of almost all of their products in water for one minute, plant it about 1" deep in soil, and voila! In just a few weeks you'll have flowering Amaranth (Bar Soaps), Genovese Sweet Basil (Facial Cream), even a spruce tree (Pangea Organics Pangea Gift Box -- buy and plant it now and maybe you'll have your very own Christmas tree by next winter!). They've got a ton of products to choose from. I personally love their Pangea Organics Lip Balm, Fennel with Grapefruit & Sweet Orange. I'm usually not a fan of fennel and previously have sworn by L'Occitane's Shea Butter one, but what can I say -- this one's better! Their Shower Gels are also nice and made entirely without synthetic preservatives, sulfates or detergents (so it's not a suddy mess!). Plus they're thick (ie concentrated to last longer and not watered down with water). I've also tried their bar soaps which smell and feel great only complaint is that they're not super long-lasting, but I love that the ingredients are chosen to have specific effects on the body and mind (ie Lavender with Damiana Tea clarifies the mind and soothes the body -- Lavender is antiseptic/relieves tension, while Damiana Tea is anti-inflammatory/aphrodisiac). The scents really do make them relaxing. They've also got great Hand & Body Lotions and about a million different face products as well as a nice selection of oils.

Frugal Earth Day Finds

weleda.jpgdr dobbs.gif

There's sort of a catch-22 when it comes to eco-friendly products, because we all want to use earth-friendly products, but not all of us can afford the prices that most of them go for. Luckily not all organic/natural lines come with three figure price tags. We've rounded-up three wonderful frugal finds all of which are earth-friendly! First-up - Organix. Organix's packaging sort of reminds me of Philosophy's, no?? It's so much better though, because not only is it cheaper (each of their shampoos and conditioners are only $6.99), but the line is formulated with organic active ingredients, and is sulfate and paraben-free. They've got four new scents -- Moisturizing Grapefruit Mango Butter, Energizing Passionfruit Guava, Enriching Cucumber Yogurt, and Fortifying Lavender Soymilk -- love the Lavender Soymilk and their Vanilla Silk! Moving from hair to skin, we've got Weleda. They've got a fab facial kit formulated with Biodynamic and organic ingredients called the Wild Rose Facial Care Kit. It comes nicely packaged and is priced at only $14.99 (which is great considering that it has an anti-aging formulation). This line is rich in essential fatty acids to help reduce the visible effects of premature aging and contains -- Wild Rose Cleansing Lotion (.35 fl oz), Wild Rose Facial Toner (.35 fl oz), Wild Rose Moisture Cream (.35 oz), and Wild Rose Night Cream (.33 oz). More after the jump!

Bobbi Brown Plum Wine Cheek Shimmer

| Leave Comment
bb-plumwine-cheek.jpgI had a very fun Friday last week; it started with Heroes and Handbags Luncheon and a couple of mimosas (I'm on the committee and we raised almost $300,000 just at the lunch! It benefits Heroes for Children-- an organization that provides financial assistance to families of children with cancer, no request has ever been denied!). It continued with a group of my girlfriends in the lounge of the hotel it was held at and more champagne (I didn't drive and we had to celebrate a successful event!) and finally ended at Neiman Marcus. Tipsy shopping is the best! We went over to the beauty counters to play with make up and I noticed that after a long day of 'fun' my face needed freshening up, badly. Of course I headed over to the Bobbi Brown counter and asked to be touched up for dinner. The SA showed me the new shimmer blushes and I decided to be bold and try the Plum Wine (truth be known a glass of plum wine sounded really good to me after the champagne!). She dusted my cheeks with it and I looked instantly refreshed! It is the most beautiful shade of pinky plum. It looked almost purple-ish in the palette but on my face it looked like I'd been on a healthy walk and not indulging in bubbly :) A little goes a long way with this shade and it's got the subtle shimmer to it that makes you glow like you're a college co-ed. Plum Wine cheek shimmer is $22 at Bobbibrown.com

Freeze 24/7 Mineral Makeup with SPF 18

minerals_product.jpg

Everyone wants flawless skin, right? But sometimes putting on too much make up in an attempt to achieve flawlessness leaves you looking cakey and overdone. I always use foundation to make my skin even and looking like porcelain (or so I believe) but it is hard to strike that perfect balance between getting enough coverage and looking perfectly natural. I have a closet full of foundation that I've tried, some are great, some have failed but nothing compares to the new Freeze 24/7 Mineral makeup system! A very light coverage completely transforms my skin to looking like porcelain - I no longer need to deceive myself, I actually have perfect milky skin. And even better is the bronzer that gives the most natural hint of sun. It has just a touch of highlighting shine to pick up the light but it is not at all sparkly, and it doesn't actually make you darker and tanned, it just gives you healthy color. There is also a blush to add rosiness to the cheeks. The system comes with 2 makeup shades to blend for a customized tone, a bronzer and the blush. The lighter of the makeup shades can be used to highlight under the eyes, brows, nose and chin. I am so in love with this and wake up in anticipation of putting on make up! The mineral has anti-aging qualities and it has SFP 18 so you are literally covered on all fronts! It comes with brushes so it is convenient and easy on top of achieving the natural beauty that you were meant to have! Freeze 24/7 Mineral Make Up, $85, comes in fair, medium and tan.

Customize, Simplify, and Organize with Bobbi Brown!

bobbi_brown_customize_simplify_organize.jpg

I got a text message from Bobbi Brown over the weekend from Morocco, where she is on a biking trip. She told me she'd been in Paris the week before to see editors and check out her new boutique there. My first question was "What bag are you carrying on this fabulous adventure?" To which she responded, "I will be biking with my Patagonia green packpack. Had my square black prada handbag in Paris. You know I'm a classic Prada girl, with an odd birkin or two or three or... "  I was going to ask her what beauty products she had with her but I am betting she is traveling with her new Customize.Simplify.Organize system!

"The Customize.Simplify.Organize system is designed for women to customize their makeup and be their own makeup artists. It's an easy way to take less, but have more."  Bobbi told us.

Beginning in April, Bobbi introduces this new collection which is designed to work with her customizable palette system. For the first time ever, take your personalized foundation, blush, eye shadow and lip products with you wherever you go in a convenient compact! (Jump for new colors!)

Clé de Peau: Pure Perfection

cle-de-peau-la-creme.jpgClé de Peau has been on my radar since I first tried the iconic "La Creme" years ago. I had never tried its color collection, however, until the Beauty Event last week at Neiman Marcus North Park.  I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Clé de Peau National Make Up consultant Kyriaki Savrani that day and she helped me pick out make up colors (is there anything more fun than playing with make up all day?). A native of Greece, make up artist Kyriaki Savrani's resume extends across all corridors of the beauty industry. The sophisticated beauty got her start in 1992 while attending art school in Paris and assisting Stephen Marais. Since then Kyriaki has built an extensive list celebrity clientele (Nicole Kidman, Naomi Campbell, Anne Hathaway, Audrey Tautou and many others) and work with designers such as Chanel, Valentino, Dior and Karl Lagerfeld.  Yet no matter how "haute" the couture, Kyriaki brings her own unique perspective to her craft.

cle_de_peau_silky_lipstick.jpgDuring our interview, I learned a lot about the brand and its devoted followers.  Kate Moss apparently swipes a tube of the uber popular Extra Silky lipstick-$50 everytime they do her make up.  I wonder if I can get away with same at the counter?  I'm all about new shade 118 (Lily of the Nile)-- it's a soft pinkish beige that looks really natural!  Plus the formula has a shine to it so you don't need lip gloss.  Kyriaki declared that the era of heavy gooey gloss that bubble when you talk is over!  A hint of shine is much more sexy though she is all about the matte lipstick (in red no less!)

cle_de_peau_foundation.jpg
Another exciting newly formulated product is the Cream Foundation. ($118).  It now comes with a twist applicator that gives you the exact dosage you need (in the shape of the Cle de peau logo) so you won't waste a drop of this amazingly velvety foundation.  Kyriaki put O10 on me (at lunch she predicted I'd be O10 by looking at my chest.  Apparently the chest is the perfect spot to match foundation!) and it was the perfect shade for me.  (Just a warning, you'll read the word "perfect" a lot in this post.)  I was with a friend before going to Neiman Marcus and told her I was interviewing Kyriaki and she squealed, "I love the Cream Foundation, it's all I wear!  Tell them it's my favorite brand!"

Clé de Peau Brilliant Enhancer

cle_de_peau_brilliant_enhancer.jpg
I am all about faking luminous skin, especially now that I am no longer 25!  I have used everything from YSL Touche Eclat to the discontinued Revlon Skinlights but am always on the prowl for the next best thing. Apparently the latest and greatest is Clé de Peau's Brilliant Enhancer which I got to try last week during the Beauty Event at Neiman Marcus.  The pen and brush is similar to that of the YSL Touche Eclat but that's where the similarities end.  Unlike the Touche Eclat, the Brilliant Enhancer is not meant to be used as a cover up so it's not as thick and gooey.  The texture is lightweight like a lotion and it delivers as promised, a quick swipe across my cheek bone and I was dewy like a college co-ed.  I also had the opportunity to interview Kyriaki Savrani, Clé de Peau Beauté Make Up Consultant, who was in town for the event and will have that feature up tomorrow.  In the meantime, I am curious what you guys think of Clé de Peau products and whether or not you've tried the Brilliant Enhancer because I am starting to obsess over this line of luxurious products!  $62 At Neiman Marcus.com
bobbi_shimmer_brick.jpgshimmerbloc_LM.jpg
I'll admit it, I'm biased towards Bobbi Brown products-- I've been a devoted fan since my first beige lipstick in college but this entry is not about which brand I prefer-- it's a debate about which came first and which is better. Laura Mercier has a strong following and reputation of her own so I'm sure she'll have plenty of defenders here for her Shimmer Bloc. But seriously, isn't it a bit too conveniently similar in name and function to Bobbi's Shimmer Brick? Okay, so brick and bloc aren't exactly identical but it has the same meaning. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of Laura Mercier in my make up drawer but I'm just curious to why she didn't name hers something less similar than Bobbi's. I've tried both and find Mercier's Bloc a bit too frosty. I prefer the Bricks because there are varying degrees of color and you can control the shades better.  At the risk of sounding like a snob, I also find the Shimmer Brick to be more chic looking, too.  What about you? Which do you prefer and why?

MD Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel

AlphaBetaDailyPeel.jpg

There are so many home use peels, I've used a lot of them and most have some effectiveness but I really have not noticed much differences among them. Until I tried the MD Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Peel. This is the first acid peel that has a 2 step process, first the acid (this is a blend of salicylic, glycolic and lactic acid) and then a neutralizer to stop the acid from continuing to penetrate the skin. This is the type of process you would get at a doctor's office. But let me back up. When you get a peel at a doctor's office, they need to use a neutralizer because the acid they use is super strong. But this neutralizer is still useful because it stops that annoying itching and stinging and calms the skin down. So it does serve a purpose but the acid itself is not strong enough to actually reverse aging, for that kind of result, you need to go to a doctor. What this will do is, it will remove the superficial layer of dead skin to reveal the nicer new skin below. You get super smooth skin and a youthful glow. For me, that's all I am asking for with a product like this. I have to say, my skin looks pretty damn good right now!!! If you use this daily, as it is intended, it might penetrate deep enough to have some effect on wrinkles but it would be subtle. After the first few uses, I didn't notice much of anything, but after more uses, I felt the acid intensify which means it took off the dead layers of skin and is getting deeper in the skin. Most doctors will tell you that daily use of this type of peel is effective but if nothing else it will prevent aging. And how do I know that? I just interviewed an Oculoplastic Surgeon and Liposculpture specialist and got the whole scoop on peels and other procedures. I will be posting that next week so make sure you check back for the very interesting and informative interview. MD Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, 30 Day supply for $78, 60 day is $128. For convenience, the 30 Day Supply Travel Packs is $80 and are individually wrapped like the wet wipes you get after you eat ribs.

Instyle has great tips on choosing the right foundation for your skin tone.  Of course it's best to go in person and allow a make up artist assist and asses you but at least this will give you an idea of how to choose one to best flatter your complexion.  I am Asian with yellow toned skin but I never buy yellow foundation, it just makes me look yellower!  I always choose one with a subtle pinkish beige undertone.  After you try a new foundation at a cosmetic counter, always walk over to the door to see what it looks like in natural lighting.  The golden cast from cosmetic counter lighting is deceiving!  And to avoid the aging mask like look, add a drop of your favorite moisturizer into your foundation before applying and you'll glow with the look of youth!

Darphin Rose Aromatic Care

darphin_essentialoil.jpg

In the interest of preventing aging, I have been using various creams and moisturizers to make sure my skin gets all the advantages it can get. I use heavy creams in the winter and lighter ones in the summer because it is either too heavy or not moisturizing enough so I have to play this balancing act. What I needed was something that my skin was thirsting for and now that I have switched to Darphin essential oils, my skin is thanking me profusely by acting calm and smooth and looking radiant! My skin sucks the oils right up like it has been needing it all its life. I have no problems putting oil on my skin, I love oils and don't have the notion that oils will clog my pores or give me pimples. And this certainly does none of that. The Darphin essential oils are light and the molecules are super small so it penetrates to the source. I used this for a week and I was hooked, no more trying to guess what I need, this is it! It also smells so incredible! Dr. Darphin was the first plastic surgeon to develop his own line in the 50' to prevent the need of surgery, it prevents aging by fighting free radicals, which is what damages the skin and causes wrinkles. There are different oils depending on what your skin type is. The Rose Aromatic Care is for normal skin. You should follow up with your regular moisturizer for full spectrum care. At Darphin for $80.

BVLGARI Gem Essence Skincare

bvlgariprecieus.jpgbvlgaricremenuit.jpg
Best known for its highest quality stones and ability to combine gems in creations with extraordinary chromatic effects, Bvlgari is now exploring the beneficial properties of gem stones on the skin. Produced in Switzerland, each product contains Bvlgari Gem Essence; a formula of four extracts of fine and precious stones: sapphire, malachite, tourmaline and citrine. This unique formula provides three main benefits to the skin: radiance, nourishment and protection. There are three skincare programs: Precieuse Line, Lumiere Line and Cleansing Line. I received samples of the Precieuse line and am impressed with the luxurious and innovative line of skincare. The Serum Precieux felt lightweight but delivers a deeply hydrating formula that makes the skin appear younger immediately. It also left a very smooth texture which made it great to use during the day under make up. The night cream (Creme Precieuse Nuit) was equally impressive with a deeply nourishing texture that left my skin ultra soft and moisturized throughout the night. Available at Neiman Marcus North Park, call 214-363-8311 to order!

Get the Celeb Look: Summer Glow

My boyfriend is originally from Cali and I'm already dreading him going back to visit his family next week because most every time he goes (even if it's to go skiing in Tahoe), he comes back with a tan and then we stand together and I feel even more self-conscious about my paleness! That said while I don't think I'll ever get over my self-consciousness about my pale skin, I've come to terms with the fact that you can have a healthy summer glow without having a tan -- rosy checks and glossy lips are sometimes all it takes! I'm loving Estee Lauder's Bronze Goddess line -- Beauty Snob Tina gave a great run down of the products that anyone interested in the line should check-out! They've got some nice colors to complement lighter skin tones (despite being called Bronze Goddess:)!) -- love the browns in the eyeshadow palette and they blend well together (just a slight hint of sparkle and the palette is also a relatively good deal at $38). I'm not a huge fan of the fragrance because it's very coconuty, but it does have that beachy smell that will make you feel like it's summer even on a cool spring day. To complement the brown shades I mixed some luminizing foundation in with my regular one (though LORAC makes a great Luminizing Powder that could also work), added a hint of powder blush (Prescriptives has some great ones), and finished-off with a clear gloss (though a creamy lipstick could do as well and I actually remember reading that Jennifer Anniston sometimes dabs a bit of Chanel Hydrabase Lipstick in Coco Red on the apples of her cheeks!). What do you use to achieve a sexy summer glow?

REN Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask

REN_GlycolacticPeel.jpg

I have been traveling non stop and not only have I not had time for my regular facials, my skin is in serious need of reviving. I finally got time to pamper myself at home with this Glycolactic Peel from REN. The people behind REN reminds me of Ben & Jerry, they love what they do and they want to make the world greener by doing things better. It is a totally green line using only renewable ingredients that are 100% natural and organic. This Glycolactic Peel has fruit enzyme and acids that is very gentle but totally powerful for a major pore cleanse and dead skin cell removal. I hate that part of the facial when they squeeze your face to death, I stopped doing facials like that and it is totally unnecessary when you use fruit acids and enzymes to remove that stuff. This will clean your pores completely, including any blackhead you may have. The morning after the peel, my skin looks peachy and flush. For the best results, I use a scrub the day after the peel to help with the skin renewal by removing any access dead skin that is on the surface. You will be amazed by the fresh skin that is yours!! The only caveat is, this peel does make you itchy and tingly while it's on and it needs to stay on for a full 10 minutes to have its full effect, but trust me, it is worth 10 minutes of a very slight discomfort. I walk around the house with it on and check emails or whatever to distract me. It is a peach color so you won't scare anyone with it on! REN Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask at Sephora for $55.

Estee Lauder Vivid Garden Illuminating Powder

esteelauder_vividgardenpowder.jpg

Kick start your summer with a healthy glow from Estee Lauder's summer Vivid Garden illuminating powder. I am now officially in summer mode now that we're in daylight savings time. I get a bit of color during the summer no matter how much sunblock I use so I put away from bronzer and use a light and subtle blush like this beautiful new combination for a brightening glow. This swirly flower pattern gives you lots of options, you can use the lighter shades as highlights for brow bones and under the eyes (it makes you look fresh and alert!) and use more pink on the cheeks if you want more color. The slight smidge of gold will warm your natural tone for added radiance. Plus, the flowers are so pretty you just want to have it with you all summer long to remind you how beautiful life is =) I am in a gooshy mood today, can you tell? At Estee Lauder for $32.

Balms Away

TheBalm_BalmsAway.jpg

For those special occasions, I put on way too much make up but it is so much fun! The un-fun part is taking it off and worrying that I am rubbing too much and pulling too hard on my skin. I have make up remover and oils and all that but it still takes some time to work things out. Balms Away is a blend of oils like vitamins A, C, and E that hydrate and restore the skin while is melts away the make up. It breaks up even water proof mascara easily so you don't have to rub and rub and rub and all the ingredients are made to be good for your skin so you get the benefits of that while it's working. I tested this out by putting on the most massive amounts of black eyeshadow, water proof mascara, stage make up and red lipstick. I used a liberal amount but I think I over did it because this stuff is powerful, within a minute I was able to wipe off everything entirely clean! Mind you, I did this at a makeup counter and not at home so it was a huge risk because I could have ended up walking around all day with make up stains and looking like a crazy woman. I would have used water to get this off so I can avoid the rubbing altogether. There are no harmful or synthetic ingredients, just goodness to make you fresh again. At Balms Away at Sephora for $20.

La Mer SPF 30 UV Protecting Fluid

lamerfluid.jpgI have many girlfriends who are dedicated La Mer users. No matter how hard you try to persuade them to other brands just to try-- they refuse! I can understand the addiction though, as there a few items from La Mer that I won't give up myself (the serum for example, it heals burns and wrinkles at the same time- it's the PERFECT product!). Well all La Mer freaks can rejoice, they're launching a UV protective fluid with SPF 30! Perfect for the upcoming warm weather, the SPF 30 UV Protecting Fluid is a fantastic daily use product as it combines SPF protection with skin treatment benefits.

Lightweight and fast absorbing, the fluid uses gemstones to enhance the formula's anti-oxidant activity, Hollow Photonic Spheres to create a flattering light effect and a new Smart Seaweed Ferment that helps protect skin against pH, temperature and humidity changes (and it keeps skin comfortable, hydrated and soothed). Plus, its flawless finish is great under makeup! Sounds like another winner. I just ordered mine and can't wait to get it (is there anything better than a box at your door with La Mer inside?) $65 -- La Mer at Saks Fifth Avenue

Guerlain Super Aqua Serum

Guerlain_Serum.jpgicon
For Fashion Week in New York, I got my makeup done by Cheri at the Fashion Suite at Waldorf Astoria, she did a great job but that is not what I was most impressed with. We were chatting and she mentioned that she is 50 years old and I almost fell off my chair! She looks 35, at most 38, I am not kidding. She is fair with delicate skin that usually ages prematurely. She then told me her secret and I immediately bought some. It is the Guerlain Super Aqua Serumicon for day and night moisturizing. It is made with extracts from a dessert rose and if you think about it, it makes total sense, the flower is able to thrive in dryness so there must be something to its DNA that I can definitely use! I mean, I live in LA and it is dry dry dry all year round. It shields the skin from the harmful environment so the hydration is allowed to stay in. She has been using this for 15 years and I am telling you, she has not aged since she first started using it because like I said, she looks 35! This thing is like a vampire's secret. I must and will stay my age forever =) At Sakes Fifth Avenueicon for $162.

Wei East WE Help Bring Hope Collection - MARCH GIVEAWAY!

Win a set of WE Help Bring Hope Collection by telling us Wei East.jpg I would recommend that everyone watch a video posted on the Wei East website in which the founder of the ancient Chinese herbal medicine-inspired beauty line, Wei Yang Brian, discusses what inspired her to create Wei East WE Help Bring Hope Collection. The collection of eight of Wei East skin care's best sellers retails for $70 ($300 value), and 100% of sales go to autism (Autism Speaks and The Autism Treatment Center of America). The box totally puts a smile on my face. It was designed by Wei herself and displays a drawn picture of Wei pushing her son, who is autistic, on his favorite swing and her daughter chasing a butterfly in the yard with a bright sun in a perfect blue sky shining down on them. Wei says that it's the feeling of hope that brings sunshine into her life and that's something that truly shines through in this collection and in the video. Naturopathica Green Tea and Wasabi Mask

Naturopathica-Green-Tea-Wasabi-Mask.jpg

I know, this sounds like what you had with last night's dinner but this mask is so natural you could probably eat it! I love the Naturopathica line, it is holistic and effective. If you don't have time or on a budget, using the right products could replace your monthly facials. I have been running around, traveling like crazy so my facial schedule is totally off. I have all these events to go to so I have to make sure I look good. This mask works miracles. It is anti aging and renews your skin cells with raw wasabi and green tea extracts. It will make your skin soft and smooth so I have been using it the day before a big event to make sure my makeup goes on evenly. So the big question is, does that wasabi sting? Yes, it does a little, I love the feeling of products working on my skin so I don't mind but this isn't as strong as come acid or enzyme masks I've used. It also is not green, it kind of looks like chocolate chip coffee ice cream, the raw wasabi are little dark specks. I am starting to try more from this line that I have come to love!! At Naturopathica for $56.

Elemental Herbology Cell Plumping Facial Hydrator Spf 8

elementalherbology_cellplumping.jpg

You have to admit, you want everything to be organic these days especially for your face! But you don't want to compromise the effectiveness because it's not like any of us is getting any younger (I am feeling the stress of age because my birthday is next week!!). Elemental Herbology has a really great line of organic products but it is the Cell Plumping moisturizer that has made it into my daily routine. It has SPF 8 which isn't enough to get you to the beach but for everyday wear, it is all you need. The light cream goes on easily but it keeps your face nice and hydrated all day without any grease or weight. But it is the smell that really has me going back for more. It is like getting an aromatherapy treatment every time you use it, the scents are distinctly floral like lavender with hints of the ocean. I don't know how to describe it really it, I'm not saying it smells fishy but it has this beachy goodness that is so divine, it changes my outlook on life immediately after applying. Yes, it is seriously that awesome!! Available at Space NK for $88.50.

Frugal Snob Grammy Look: Queen Latifah

queen latifah.jpg

I have to admit that while I'm a big fan of mixing and matching drugstore with prestige finds I've never tried anything from CoverGirl. It's actually surprising because I love their off-beat choices of celebs for their campaigns. Ellen DeGeneres a CoverGirl -- genius! If you're going with a celeb over a model for an advertisement campaign I love when brands don't go for the same boring run-of-the-mill choices (kind of like Agent Provocateur picking Maggie Gyllenhaal, Daisy Lowe and Peaches Geldof...nice to see some new faces!). All that good stuff said I was able to get some tips from Sam Fine who did Queen Latifah's makeup for the Grammys. Along with the tips he gave us a list of CoverGirl products to use to achieve the natural look he helped Queen Latifah achieve -- seriously she looks like she's wearing no makeup! "Often clients make requests," says makeup artist Sam Fine. "Queen had one request: she wanted to look natural with wonderful skin, sparse lashes and a great brow. Most of the time was spent perfecting the canvas." See specific tips after the jump!

Grammy Look: Sheryl Crow

| Leave Comment

sheryl crow.jpgWhat Demi Moore was to this year's Golden Globes, Sheryl Crow was to this year's Grammys -- I mean how amazing does she look for 46! Her dress was by Toni Maticevski, though it was her Lorraine Schwartz jewels and her glowing skin that caught my attention! She just plays that carefree girl on the beach so well that every time I see a photo of her I think of her song "Soak Up The Sun"! A great product to achieve glowing skin is LORAC Perfectly Lit Oil-Free Luminizing Powder Radiant. It has a wonderful shine without all that over-glitter-ness you often find in products meant to impart shine. Also Prescriptives has just come-out with their Spring color collection and they have some wonderful new LipShine shades. The best part is if you do your Colorprint at a Prescriptives counter they can let you know which shade is the best fit for your specific skin palette!

Make Up Forever: Valentine's Forever

makeupforevervalentines.jpg It matters not how long you've been married or dating, when it comes to date night (especially on Valentine's Day) you've got to pull out all the stops!  Make Up Forever makes it easy and fun to get all dolled up with just a few essentials (for less than $100!).  A pouty red lip (Aqua lips #8C and lipstick 205), smoldering eyes (Aqua Eyes #0L), flushed pink cheeks (sculpting blush #8) and a set of flirty lashes (Faux Lash Alexandra #110).  I love the Aqua eyes eyeliner for rimming the inside edge of the upper eyes, it makes the fake lashes blend in better.  And hello-- nothing is sexier than red hot lips-- but line them after applying your lipstick!  Lastly, I love a very pink and very flushed cheek-- smile and apply in circular motion on the apples of your cheeks to get that youthful cherub look.  All at Sephora.com

New Sensai Color Collection

Sensai New.jpgI gotta thank Beauty Snob Tina for giving so much praise to Kanebo Sensai in the past and thus turning my attention to their wonderful line of products! This month, just in time for Valentine's Day, the Japanese prestige skincare company is expanding into color! Their new treatment makeup line consists of 22 eye, lip, and cheek buys. Of note is their 38˚C Mascara ($25, haven't tried it but it supposedly only comes-off in water above 38˚C). They've also got Eye Shadow Palettes ($50) with four sheer, layerable shades and a Cheek Blush palette ($45), that are worth checking-out. Best of all, to fete their new line, Bergdorf Goodman is offering complimentary 45 minute customized purifying facials, featuring the Kanebo Saho skincare technique of double cleansing, double moisturizing and double application to help bring-out your skin's natural glow! The only catch - you'll have to indulge yourself by buying $200 worth of Kanebo product.

Smooth Skin from Clarins

Clarins1.jpgClarins 2.jpg

Clarins is to skincare what beauty is to Audrey Hepburn -- they just go hand-in-hand for me! Lucky for us Clarins has two very exciting launches coming-up for spring. First they have High Definition Body Lift ($65, officially launching in March). It's their 5th generation cellulite control cream. Like many us know from repeated experience cellulite creams don't really work in getting rid of cellulite -- as I found out when I had my bad experience with Shiseido Body Creator. What a good cellulite cream can do however is tighten and smooth your skin...well at least make it feel like it's tight and smooth for a little while after you apply it! That's exactly what Clarins High Definition Body Lift does. As far as cellulite fighters go this is the best I've tried and it's covered by three patents so there's definitely some new formulations going on (plus it has that wonderful signature Clarins fresh smell!). It's also non-sticky, lightweight, and non-oily so it's not only moisturizing, but quickly absorbs into your skin so there's no need to wait before dressing. Clarins is also coming-out with Bright Plus HP Intensive Brightening Botanical System ($155, officially launching in April). It's a 21 day system that you use at night. It has two parts, one for age control and one for brightening. It's a great way to kick-off a spring beauty routine and get rid of your winter skin...ahh can't wait for the warm weather to start-up again!

Picture Perfect with M·A·C Well Defined Studio Make Up

macstudiosculpt.jpgIt is very difficult to achieve the flawless face that you see on the runways and in glossies.  I have about 10 bottles of foundation in my make up stash right now but have yet to find the perfect fool proof make up for photo shoots and television appearances (I always look like a grease ball!). Until I received a sample of M·A·C Studio Sculpt Foundation.

Creamy but not oily, it glides on the skin flawlessly-- without the weird caking in pores/lines. I tried it on my wrist first and when I saw how easily it blended in, I smeared it all over my face. You will not believe how easy and smooth this foundation is! Once again, M·A·C has shattered expectations for foundation performance with its debut of Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation. The gel-based cream formula is the final result of an extensive collaboration between M·A·C's Product Development experts and PRO team of makeup artists.

Backstage at fashion week provides the perfect testing ground for M·A·C's new products and our artists, working tirelessly at countless fashion shows, were eager for a foolproof makeup they could apply quickly and easily. Studio Sculpt is the answer to their prayers. It glides on smoothly and blends effortlessly for a flawless satiny finish--even when additional layers are needed for extra coverage.

The water-resistant blend leaves complexions perfectly even-toned and hydrated, while providing all-important broad-spectrum sun protection. Try it for yourself when it hits M·A·C stores and online on Feb. 7th. (Jump for more details!)

Freeze 24/7 Daily Essentials Skincare System

freeze247.jpg

How many products claim to make your skin healthy as well as prevent common signs of aging? Yeah, can't be helped but I'm a bit of a skeptic. Seems like a lot to ask from a few products, but I am impressed by the Freeze 24/7 Daily Essentials Skincare System. I am hooked, I must admit, after using this for a week. There are three steps to this skincare system: Cleanse, Exfoliate, and Hydrate. You begin by using the Skin Glace Daily Detoxifying Cleanser and Mask. You would not think that this gentle and thin cleanser would be so powerful in actually removing your every day make up so thoroughly, but it does. You then go on to the IceCrystals Anti-Aging Prep and Polish, which I absolutely LOVE! This exfoliate has tiny crystals that you massage over your face that instantly give you the tingling sensation that let's you know things are working. Once you rinse and dry your face you will instantly notice the deep cleaning that leaves your face so soft and pure. The IceCream Double Scoop Intensive Anti-Aging Moisturizer completes this mini facial experience by rejuvenating the cells. You will go to sleep a very happy girl knowing that a lot was accomplished! After only a week, I have noticed my skin healthier, brighter and smoother. Freeze 24/7 Daily Essentials Skincare System, $150, also available at Henri Bendel, Fred Segal and Saks Fifth Avenue (in store only).

Givenchy Le Soin Noir

givenchylesoinnoir.jpgIf sticky gooey black sap from the depth of the ocean doesn't sound appealing to you what about velvety rich skin? I received a sample of this goo from Givenchy and was hesitant to use it at first-- it's not the most appealing of color, texture or smell but vanity won out. After using it for a week, my skin had a velvety texture but my finger nails did not fare as well. They had a gray/black tint to them! I didn't want to stop using this so I did what any beauty obsessed snob would have done-- I made it work and bought surgical gloves in order to apply it.

The reason for the dark color is the Vital Black Algae Sap Concentrate-- an ingredient found in the depths of the ocean rich in vital fatty acids. This rare black algae extract been shown to protect skin cells' DNA from light-induced aging and wrinkles, and repair itself to form smoother, younger skin. Just make sure you wash your hands immediately after applying! Givenchy Le Soin Noir 1.7 oz $360 At Sephora.com Gimmick or miracle ingredient? Have you tried this?

Jane Iredale Obsession: Gold powder, Highlighter Pencil and Lip Drink

I can't get enough of Jane Iredale mineral make up! I stopped by the Cooper Spa again last week to play with more stuff and found a few more can't live without items.

First up is the "Lip Drink"-- my hubby and son have taken it from me for their golf outings so I need to get another one. It's SPF 15 so I am relieved they're using it.  It has the slightest hint of lemon and herbs and makes lips smooth, immediately. Jane Iredale LipDrink Lip Balm SPF 15 for $11.60. This has replaced my Fresh sugar lip balm. And hello, it's half the price! Delish!

Next up is the 24kt Gold Dust for $12-- if you already have the Cotton Candy blush you know that the real flecks of gold give you a flawless sheen like not other.  This may be used all over your body and you won't glitter like the Strip, I promise-- it's subtle!  This will flatter any skin tone no matter how light/dark your complexion is! Jane Iredale 24-Karat Gold Dust

Lastly, the Eye Highlighter pencil that I now keep in my bag to perk me up mid day.  I don't drink coffee nor tea (caffeine intolerance) so I depend on my products to give me that zing and zip at 5pm.  I use this all over my face actually, it lightens hollow areas and gives me a youth like fullness. Use the white tip on the cupid bow of your lips and on the inner corners of the eyes. You'll see what I mean! Jane Iredale Eye Highlighter Pencil, White/Pink $15

Cheap fun but amazing results!
Update: release is in Feb. Apologies for the error in date! mackitty.jpg kittystuffed.jpgThe eagerly anticipated Hello Kitty collaboration from MAC arrives at stores today. There is a "Mild" Kitty collection of muted shades and a "Wild" Kitty collection of bold and neon hues. Choose your poison and your Hello Kitty tote/make up bags/accessories along with a 14" Hello Kitty plush doll so you can overdose in Kitty style. I am a bit old to be playing with Hello Kitty (don't ask why there is a pink Hello Kitty beach cruiser in my garage!) but a glittery lip gloss or two will keep me young and happy. The icon adored by millions will arrive at MAC counters today with its limited edition collection of color, finishes, glitter, and shine! Or check out MAC Cosmetics online.

What do you think?  Is it normal for grown women like me to love Hello Kitty?
