Crimped Hair: Snob or Slob?

underwood_style_transformation_pm.jpgmadonna400.jpg

I just cut my hair and looking at these pictures is making me regret it! Not that my hair is short -- it still falls just below my shoulders -- but it's not long enough to rock the crimped look as well as the ladies pictured above. What a fun, sassy look and it works great for fall, especially against the austere silhouettes and dark palettes that many of the fall 2009 collections have. My only pet peeve about crimped hair is when the crimps are too even and you see the marks from the crimping iron!

What do you think about crimped hair? Snob or Slob?

Celeb Trend: Hot Pink Lips

Pink lips I like; pink glossy lips, now that's a whoooole other story.

I'm not one to wear a deep red or an orange lip, so I've always found a pink lip to be a happy medium when I'm looking to make a bolder statement than I would ordinarily (day-to-day I'm all about a light, natural gloss). I like to wear hot pink lips matte (check-out shu uemura Rouge Unlimited Pink Collection), with my hair pulled back out of my face. I'm not into Taylor Momsen's 80s Madonna look and while I think Rachel McAdams looks fab, I think she would have looked even better were her hair a bit more out of her face. As for Katy Perry's look, it's way, way too Barbie for my taste. She looks like one of those young beauty pageant girls with the obsessive stage moms!

Celeb Trend: The 'Lob'

The 'Lob' -- a long version of the classic 'Bob' hair style -- is fast becoming one of the hottest red carpet styles. I was first made aware of its popularity at a Pantene event I went to last month and since I've been noticing countless celebs rocking it. I actually don't think I've seen  Anne Hathaway or Gwyneth Paltrow's hair look better than in the photos above -- loving the style! For tips on how to best wear this look I spoke with Sarah Potempa, Aussie's Celebrity Hair Stylist. See what she has to say after the jump!

Celeb Look: Dual Hair Textures

Obviously none of the hair looks pictured above come even close to being achieved effortlessly, but the fact that a mix of textures were used does give them a nice easy-breezy feel! This look works great especially if your hair is long (at least long enough to put up in a ponytail). I spoke with Anthony Campbell, a Redken Session Stylist, to get some specific tips on how best to achieve the mixed texture look. Jump for more!

Frugal How-To: Half-Up Glam

Celebrity and expert stylist for Pantene, Hallie Bowman, recently hosted an event for Pantene where she showcased some of fall's hottest looks along with step-by-step instructions on how to achieve them. One of my favorite fall looks is the half-up glam style which looks like a variation on the classic Pompadour. It's a day-to-night look that's put together, but not too old-school. A good tip that Bowman gave while showing us how to create this look is to leave some hair behind the ear (a la Angelina Jolie)...so wonderfully effortless looking! Jump for Hallie's how-to guide to get this look!

Celeb Trend: Body Shimmer

For the most part I don't like the idea of makeup on my body (especially when it's hot and I'm stressing about sweat marks!), which is why despite my constant moaning and groaning about how pale my skin is I very rarely actually do something about it. There's no denying though that some light body shimmer --especially on toned bodies like the ones pictured above -- gives off an amazing healthy glow. For those days where I go the extra mile to look my absolute best  NARS Body Glow ($59) and ModelCo Shimmer Airbrush Luminizer Shimmer Airbrush Illuminizer ($30) are both in my arsenal of options to give my body some light, natural shimmer.

Do you ever opt for body shimmer?

Celeb Look: Creamy Nude Lips

I love the clean, fresh look that comes with a nice, creamy nude lip. It's also an easy way to off-set bold eye makeup which is essential for me given my penchant for metallics. An easy way to achieve the look is to apply Laura Mercier Lip Colour - Sheer Nude Lips ($20) and then dab and blend a bit of liquid foundation or concealer with it (this goes hand in hand with my penchant for putting sweeps of bronzer in my hair!).

Celeb Look: Long Lashes

We all want lovely long lashes -- duh! But how we go about achieving them varies greatly. Some of us are brave enough to try Latisse, others swear by Dior Show Mascara, and others opt for faux. Make Up For Ever is particularly renowned for the later option -- check out some options here and here (shu uemura also has a wide array of options). For me however it has always been more about maintaining and accentuating my lashes more so than actively trying to grow them, so it's all about mascara and eye makeup remover for me. Though I switch-up both often I have to say that Prescriptives False Eyelashes and a mix of Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover and Jurlique Eye Makeup Remover always prove to be the most effective in highlighting my lashes when I'm out and keeping them in tact when I remove my makeup. What's your secret for long lashes?

Celeb Trend: Orange Lips

Orange lipstick is one of those bold makeup choices that I always thought was more about the attitude of the wearer than anything about their complexion, style, or any other superficial trait. That's probably why I think out of the three ladies above Aggy pulls it off best -- who knew one could look so bad-ass with orange lips! That said, besides confidence, the key to this trend is keeping the rest of your face understated and natural-looking (ie no blue eyeshadow and uber-pink cheeks!). Would you sport orange lipstick?

For a nice soft reddish-orange try Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick, Orange Shiver ($34).

Relax Wax at Completely Bare

Completely Bare Spa logo.jpgCompletely Bare is a chain of spas (and the makers of a wide range of wax-related products), in NYC specializing in waxing and permanent hair reduction for men, women, and countless celebs (from Katherine Heigel, Kimora Lee Simmons and Kelly Rippa, to Yoko Ono). It's constantly voted among the best spots to go for a quick, effective wax so I was looking forward (at least as forward as possible when it comes to pain), to trying their wax. I went to their first ever location on Madison Ave. between 65/66. It's so discrete that despite going to Nespresso across the street on a near weekly basis, I had never noticed the spa! I opted for a full bikini, relax wax.  A numbing cream is applied to the to-be waxed area and then you can relax for about 25-30 minutes laying down with some mags, while the cream works its magic. I'm not sure if it was the numbing cream or just laying back and relaxing for a half hour, but the pre-wax routine combined with the high-quality, slow-heating wax and the aesthetician who waxed me made the whole experience the most painless wax I've had to date -- seriously. My waxer, Heather who works at the Completely Bare location on Madison every Wednesday, has over 5 years of experience waxing and she was amazing. Quick and effective -- but not so quick that you're dying throughout the process, more quick like wasabi burn in your mouth! Hurts for a second and then poof, gone! I was red through the next morning and I applied Shobha's Ingrown Relief Lotion ($22) twice a day for the week following my wax. Its been nearly two weeks now and I have nothing -- no ingrowns, redness, bumps NOTHING! More after the jump.
