I'm a sucker for great packaging when it comes to lip gloss because if there's one thing I'm taking out with me, as far as cosmetics go, when I go on a date it's lip gloss. There's nothing like busting out a gloss that gets your date's attention (there's never any harm in drawing attention to your lips!), and aside from Modelco's Lip Lights ($28) which have LED lights in the cap, Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker lip glosses ($24.99 for 3) are the most attention-grabbing. Each gloss has a sparkly cap and the words Sexy Motherpucker emblazonment on the packaging (believe me, you'll get a comment on that if your date notices...!). There are two sets of three available and all the glosses are plumping (so expect a slight tinkle). I was pleasantly surprised that the colors were light on shimmer (my biggest peeve with drugstore lip glosses is that they're usually overly shinny), and color and while they do have a taste, it dissipates quickly. The formulation is slightly sticky, but given the price and packaging they're still a sweet deal. On a side note, Soap & Glory was started by the same woman who founded Bliss and all of the packaging in the line has this kind of fabulously cheeky humor!

Estée Lauder x Neue Galerie Beauty Collaboration

I'm a sucker for a great collaborative project, so, having long been a fan of Manhattan's Neue Galerie dedicated to early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design, I was over the moon when I got word that Estée Lauder had created two limited-edition Bauhaus-inspired products centered around the work of artist Otto Dix--a crimson lipstick called Berlin Red and a complementary compact--whose exhibit will debut at the museum in March. As a refresher, the Neue Galerie was co-founded by Ronald S. Lauder (of the namesake beauty giant), so it was just a matter of time before his two passions would meld. Some of Dix's most noted works, including Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber (1925) and reclining Woman on Leopard Skin (1927) center around female figures with bold red lips, so the choice of the crimson pigment (housed in a bullet-shaped case) was au natural. The lipstick and compact will be sold exclusively in the museum's design shop. If these beauty products aren't enough to get you uptown, hopefully Dix's exhibit--the first-ever one-man show on American soil devoted to the German artist--will.

Take a Fresh Breath: Kiss My Face & Listerine

I can't believe we're getting so close to Valentine's Day! So cheesy, but I kind of love Vday and it doesn't matter to me whether or not I'm in a relationship (usually my Vdays are actually better when I'm single, because somehow boys have always seemed to disappoint me on big occasions, so better spend the day with friends:-)). A Vday-related survey found that bad breath is the number one reason why women over 25 turn down a date. Luckily I don't encounter too many men with bad breath, but going by what my dentist told me a few weeks ago most people's gums (including my own!) are in dire need of some mouthwash to tackle bacteria and keep them healthy. To that end, I thought I'd highlight two brands that have come-out with new products to treat both bad breath and gum health! First up, the obvious -- Listerine. Unlike the run-of-the-mill mouthwash you're likely thinking of however, they've recently added Total Care washes. Total Care not only kills bad breath, fights plaque, bacteria, strengthens teeth, and restores enamel, but it also prevents cavities something mouthwashes typically don't do. The one drawback to Listerine is that it's very strong flavor-wise, especially for someone like me who is sensitive to mint...I still use Bubble Gum Barbie toothpaste!). Living Proof has won more beauty awards than one could feasibly count -- and rightfully so. They tackle frizz like no other and have developed the most refreshingly scented formulations. Now the brand has launched a new product, Full Thickening Cream ($24), to their lineup of offerings. The cream is meant for those with thin, life-less, limp hair who are looking for a thicker mane. It's touted as an alternative to sprays that last only a few hours because it's made with a new polymer (called Poly Beta Amino Ester-1), that's both strong and elastic, but also durable and non-sticky. ]]> Layers The most volume will be achieved if you have some layers in your hair, whatever the length is. Make sure to ask your stylist to give you some layers if volume is your top hair concern.
Don't Overly Condition the Hair
You certainly want to have your hair well hydrated, but be careful not to excessively moisturize with heavy masks as this can tent to weigh the hair down, especially if your conditioners have lots of oils and silicones. This weight may counteract the benefits of a volumizer or thickener, like Full.
Style with Heat
The most volume will come from starting with clean hair and blowing it dry following the instructions above. Air drying will give you texture and definition, but usually not as much volume as heat styling.
Remember That Different Products Do Different Things
Full is a thickening product; it is not a root lifter and it will not give you hold. Cocktail Full with your favorite root lift product or holding product if that is the look you want. And experiment - have fun with your hair until you find your favorite style.
Coloring helps For those of you who color or highlight your hair, this will give it added texture and will help give the appearance of more volume.

Eye creams and serums somehow magically all end up in my bathroom vanity, but the latest from Kiehl's is novel. First off, while the roll-on concept packaging is not new (use deodorant lately?), in eye cream territory, it is--at least for me. It took a little getting used to when it came to removing the top cap only to have to remove a second cap, but the no-muss, no-fuss roll, dab-and-go approach is quite efficient and travel-friendly. I'd definitely recommend it for frequent fliers. I suffer from tired, puffy eyes that dry out easily--blame it on late nights watching tennis and early morning meetings--so this product, as part of Kiehl's' ever-popular "Facial Fuel" line geared towards men, managed to hydrate the under-eye areas while providing a cooling sensation (there's honey in the moisturizer!). It's also lightweight and non-greasy, which my combination skin certainly appreciates. Arctic root and hibiscus tea are two of its main components, although I'm sure the caffeine component makes this the facial equivalent of a 3PM cup of coffee.

OPI Matte Nail Polish

The OPI matte nail polish destroyed my nails. I have super strong nails that take quite a beating to break. After one use of the matte polish, my nails have been dried out and they are cracking and peeling off in layers until my nails are wafer thin. I had to cut all my nails down to the nubs to avoid further injury. Aside from the damaging effects, it looks terrible - like concrete. It's just nails on a chalk board every time I look at it. And it does not go on smoothly so there are ridges and bumps (done by a nail professional who normally does a great job!!). It also started chipping after one day!! It says not to use "base coat, top coat, drying products, or hand lotion when wearing Matte". No lotion? How is that possible? I know this trend didn't take off, thus, not exactly a "trend" but in case you're curious and wanted to experiment - consider yourself forewarned!!! At OPI.

And doing both together made my skin feel heavy, but doing just the La Mer wasn't enough to hydrate for the winter. The Ain't Misbehavin' is pretty moisturizing and to my surprise has a pretty creamy consistency for something that is made to mattify. It does absorb in quickly and doesn't leave a greasy residue. When I use it I have to do a dot on each cheek and my forehead because since it absorbs in so quickly, sometimes it sinks in before I spread it all over. To me I don't feel like it mattifies but I don't get excessively oily from using it and I'm not sure if it's clarifying because luckily enough my skin has been very well behaved (knock on wood). Maybe it is from using this, but I've been using so many new products its hard to tell. It does have willowbark in it to help with acne prone skin so that's always a perk. Celeb Fave: Rock&Republic Glosses

Of course Sandra Bullock would be obsessed with Rock&Republic glosses -- she's married to Jessie James after-all and the brand's glosses are the total poster child for rock meets glam! Their Luxe Lip Glosses ($26) are high on the shine and relatively low on the shimmer and don't apply with too much color so you can easily layer on for as much richness as you like (perfect for those who are looking for a gloss they can wear during the day to the office and out to the clubs at night:-)). My one peeve with the gloss is that I wish it had a brush applicator instead of a sponge one (why is it that so few makeup brands use brushes!?). Sponges always leave my lips a bit sticky, but on the plus side the gloss is long-lasting and the packaging is a serious bonus for me! Simple and sleek, the gloss has a black top with the Rock&Republic logo boldly displayed in thick silver letters on the cap. My fave color is "Sexy Beast" which is a lot lighter than you'd think looking at it. My lips are fairly dark and this color gave them a nice, quick boost of shine, but again you could layer on for more color. Now if only getting my hands on the Rock&Republic 'Stiletto' shoe in my size (come on -- how fun are these!? Dying that they're sold out!), would be as easy as applying this gloss!!

Bobbi Brown Cabana Corals Collection

I have had a fear of coral colored cosmetics since I was very young. It was 1983 and I was 13 years old. My BFF was a honey blonde with peaches and cream complexion and she decided to make me over. After applying coral (orange) blush and lipsticks on me she proudly showed me a mirror. The colors that looked so pretty on her were clownish and chalky on me-- it made my Asian skin look sallow and yes, really yellow. I have not touched anything in that family of colors since then... until the Pretty Powerful Ad campaign photo shoot last September. When Bobbi decided to use her creamy concealer in Light Peach (I usually use Medium Beige) on me and continued with coral colored blushes, shadows and lipstick I went along with it (you do not question Bobbi when she's applying make up on you-- you just keep your mouth shut and try not to squeal from excitement). Luckily, the result was soft and flattering, nothing like the Cover Girl versions from 1983! The shimmering peachy coral colors Bobbi used on me turned out to be the Cabana Corals line from her Spring collection. I received samples of the collection this week and have been playing with them daily. My favorite in the collection is the new Nectar Shimmer Brick, it gives a very soft and subtle coral glow-- which is surprisingly more natural than pink! The Tarte EmphasEYES™ High Definition Eye Pencil is probably one of the only pencil liners that I have been able to use. It is a super skinny retractable eye pencil, so it never gives a fat dull line. I typically never use a pencil liner because with most of them, to get a nice smooth line, you have to pull at the eye and I just refuse to do that in fear of getting fine lines and wrinkles. I mean what's the use on spending $200 on an eye cream when you're just going to abuse your face anyways. This liner applies on really smooth and I get a nice thin line without having to touch my eyes at all.
