I met Jose Eber at his Two Rodeo salon in Beverly Hills when I got my makeover from Edgar. I was actually surprised to see him in the salon but little did I know, he is there almost everyday, so I told Cynthia, the manager, that I wanted to meet him and she was like, "yeah, go ahead, go say hi". Again, little did I know, he has no pretense and apparently does not know how majorly huge and famous he is - he is totally humble, perfectly charming and heart warmingly sincere. I went and introduced myself, talked about various things, including the very botched up haircut I got a few months ago and am waiting to grow it out. He immediately saw what the problem was, the layers on top were way too short, and offered to fix it for me ......HIMSELF!! Uh, I was like, I thought you don't take new clients anymore and only consult, but he said, "Of course I will do it for you darling. And you will look gorgeous because you are gorgeous". Wow, I was in love already, he didn't even have to fix my hair =) He is a firm believer in inner beauty and says his true talent is in knowing what his clients want. Of course, his talent for transforming that knowledge into gorgeous hair is what put him on the map.

Jose had seen my hair a few days earlier so he already knew what to do. He began with me standing up, which makes totally sense since my hair is long and this is the only way to get a good view of the back. No stylist has ever done this before and now I’m wondering if the back of my hair has never received proper attention. He was so meticulous with each section of my hair, sometimes twisting a few strands and cutting ever so little, other times grabbing a bunch overhead and snipping into it with abandon. I really felt like he deliberated over each strand of my hair equally. All of this took over an hour I did not waste those precious minutes with him so I peppered in questions in between our chit chatting.

Beauty Snob: There are now celebrity chefs, celebrity trainers and of course celebrity hairstylists, but you were the first. Did you set out with this goal in mind?

Jose Eber: No, of course not. You don’t choose your career. I knew what I wanted to do at a very young age and I am good at what I do.

BS: What is the about the Farrah Fawcett wing style that made everyone bust out their curling irons trying to copy it?

JE: It is sexy, easy and carefree. It was a women’s liberation movement to get away from the stiff, sprayed hair of the day. Even Jennifer Aniston’s hair was appealing because it was sexy and carefree.

BS: What hair style do you love right now? What celebrity has it?

JE: Gwenyth Paltrow just chopped her hair. I really love it. I want to get away from the bob, it is not for everyone and it is getting to the point that everyone wants it so the trend needs to end.

BS: What features do you look at before deciding what style is right for a person?

JE: Personality. I have a talent for knowing what a person wants. It’s not about the hair, it is about the person.

BS: You are known to listen to your clients and give them what they want, but what if I said I wanted a perm?

JE: I would talk you out of it. I work with clients and point them in a certain direction but I am soft about it, I would never say, “chop off your hair”.

BS: You look fantastic, what are your beauty secrets? (At which point Jose, with a childlike innocence pouts his lips, looks in the mirror and says, “I do look good for my age, don’t I?”.)

JE: Sleep. That is my only secret. I use really cheap soap, I swear, and no moisturizer. I don’t believe in products. OK, here is my one secret. I have dry skin and oily skin, what do you call that? (to which I replied, “combination”). Yes, combination skin. So what I do is, I take my fingers, they are clean of course, and I take the oil from my nose, the oily parts and I smear it to the dry parts. It works and is totally natural!

BS: What is your typical day like?

JE: I wake up early, I don’t stay up late anymore. You know I used to party a lot but not anymore. I need 8 hours of sleep. I have a very light breakfast, I always watch what I eat. Then I make phone calls with the east coast because of the time difference. If I have house calls I do those (he does not talk about celebrity clients but I know he does house calls at Elizabeth Taylor’s home on a regular basis). If there are awards shows and special events, I make a lot of house calls. Then I go to the salon, I always go to the salon, I must be present.

Jose has agreed to continue the interview with some follow up questions. I would like to open it to our readers - so what would you like to ask the legend? Put your questions in comments and I will ask them in a phone interview. Make sure to check back for Part II of this interview!

This is a must have for the hot sweaty summer that is upon us. I plan on keeping these on hand to refresh my face and keep the pores clear. These Triad Pads are infused with a Cranberry toner to clean, hydrate and give you a healthy glow. It has a grainy texture to remove the grimy surface on your skin when you are hot. You know that yucky sticky feeling you have after the beach? If you cannot go right home and hit the shower, this will do the trick for sure. It will take off the old caked in sunscreen so it won't continue to work into those open pores created by the hot environment you're in. $30 at Arcona.com

Now that the warm weather is upon us, it’s time to put the cool, winter colors away and break out your warm, summery colors--beautiful bronzes, golds and corals. Just in time for summer, Dior is releasing its Goldrush collection. The collection features four new shades of Addict High Shine lipstick and 18-Karat versions of the 5-color eyeshadow palette and Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in tan, shimmery gold and coral hues.

The collection also includes a limited-edition medallion that contains an all-over golden glow highlighter for the eyes, cheeks and lips. The compact is adorned with champagne crystals and a satin ribbon, what a fabulous little trinket to wear around the neck or tie on your bag! I love multi-purpose products like this. Beauty Snob tip- apply a dab of this on your bottom lip over your favorite lipstick or gloss. $55 at Dior counters nationwide, Christian Dior also at Sephora.com. From looking like an Umpa Lumba to being a streaky mess, I’ve been through it all (and multiple times)!
Luckily, this month M.A.C. has a new product, Skinsheen, that they’ve promised will bronze me to perfection. I hope they’re right, because the last thing I want is to look like a pasty mess my first weekend back out in the Hamptons!

Skinsheen is a smooth-on, gel-based bronzer that’s soft and mousse-like to apply. It comes in a range from Medium to Deep Dark and is priced at $22.50. M.A.C. suggests using their $52, 179 Body Buffer brush for the best application. While Skinsheen isn’t transfer-proof, it’s highly transfer resistant, so unless you’re overly moisturized, Skinsheen will stay on and not move. From my experience, it works best if you put it on naked (not moisturized), skin and don’t do it when you’re in too much of a rush, because you’ll have to wait a few minutes for it to dry before putting back on your clothes.
The new Mac Skinsheen is available as of this month at all M.A.C. locations and at www.maccosmetics.com. Try it and tells us about your experience!

Brooke says that the Hard Candy cover was all about the eyes and that she was inspired by images taken in the sixties by photographer Sam Haskins (Cowboy Kate, Five Girls, and November Girls). All it takes is 4 easy steps and you may just come out looking like a modern version of a 60s superstar yourself!

Luckily, the makeup maven behind Madonna’s new album cover, shuemura Artistic Director, Gina Brooke, gave us the low down on how to get Madonna’s look!

So here goes….
      Step 1: Face Prep
Prepare the face with the Moisture Eye Zone Mask to hydrate your eyes and calm puffiness. For some added moisture, apply Phyto Black Lift Firming Cream to your face. Lastly, to highlight your radiant skin, apply Face Architect Smoothing Fluid Foundation beginning in the arch of your brow down to the middle of your eye, directly onto the middle of your cheekbone.

Step 2: Bold Eyes
Use a brush to apply M Beige 800 Pressed Eye Shadow above the eyelid and then use the 9YR Light Cover Crayon in the inner corner and water line to make your eyes appear larger. Finally, using a Black Drawing Pencil begin at the inner corners extending the line all the way to the end of the eyebrow.

Step 3: Lashes Galore
Curl your lashes and use Basic Black Mascara. To enhance the shape of your eyes, use Soft Cross Lashes.

Step 4: Finish off with Lips
Madonna’s look is all about the eye, so the lips are kept simple with PK301S Rouge Unlimited Crystal Shine, topped with BG 930N Gloss Unlimited.

You can get all the products mentioned on the shu uemura-usa website…so all that’s left for me to know now is where in the world can I get that dominatrix outfit Madonna is sporting!!?? (JUUUUST kidding :) )

When I am feeling draggy and drawn from lack of sleep, I grab my trusty old secret weapon-Bare Escentuals Natural Light Face Lifting Duo, and blend my way to bright eyed bushy tail-ness. It acts as a guiding light to brighten and lift areas of your face - especially unsightly under eye circles and sallow contours of your cheekbones. I have this really cool flat fan-shaped brush from Shu Uemura that I use this with. I pat the powder under my eyes, around the temple area, under my brow bone, right below my cheeks, around the folds around my mouth, under my lower lip and ta-da-- instant face lift! It's amazing what a bit of highlighting shadow can do! Who needs botox when you've got a secret weapon like this!?!? Bare Escentuals Natural Light Face Lifting Duo at Sephora- it will be the best $26 you'll ever spend!

This could not have come at a better time! My favorite bronzing lotion from True Blue Spa, Golden State, has been discontinued!! -gasp!- ...This left me to ponder what my legs would do without it when my last bottle runs out. Well, I have found a new and even better solution, All Over Bronzing Gel from Bobbi Brown! My legs have found their new best friend ♥.This stuff is magic when you need to show a little skin without blinding the room with your whiteness, and the color is so natural that everyone is going to think you spent the afternoon in St. Barts! I use it whenever I wear a dress because it gives my legs an instant color (and confidence) boost! And it doesn’t stop there, if it’s your first time on the beach this summer, this bronzer also has an SPF 15 rating…wow! This gel is SO much easier to rub in evenly than most of the other products on the market. If I was rating this product on a 1-10 scale, it would receive a 9 only because I wish the bottle came in a larger size. You need to try this!

Not all shades of nail polish have the versatility that I have seen from MAC Demi-Blanc. Demi-Blanc is translucent and iridescent, perfect for a shiny topcoat on your favorite summer shade or layered by itself for shimmery, natural looking nails. This shade is perfect for summer! Summer nails should either be bright and fun or natural, you can add Demi-Blanc to complete both looks =) …Almost year round, I cut my nails short and usually sport a light pink shade. But with beach weather here, you will find me in my bikini wearing this sexy, barely there shimmer!

*This picture is quite a bit darker than what it looks like on your nails, I recommend going in and trying it on to see the real color.

BEST SELF TANNER EVER!! I’m pretty sure I have tried every self tanner ever made, which is my qualification for recommending this to you, my beauties! I am Swedish, German, Irish and French (aka: pale), and I need to be very careful when I use self tanners because they mostly turn me orange. Most of the time I mix self tanners with lotion to dilute them before I apply, otherwise my light skin will show every streak and every glop. Does this sound familiar? For my fellow naturally pale friends, this is exactly the product for you. This is the first product I can tell you delivered exactly what I had always hoped for, a faux day of sun bathing. The really great part about this is that you can totally notice a difference after the first application, but you can also continue to build it up by reapplying every few days or as needed…

Clinique Self-Sun: <a href="http://www.clinique.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY20553&PRODUCT_ID=PROD12940"target=_blank">Touch of Bronze Moisturizing Body Lotion -$18.50

...Read on for self-sun application tips and tricks ;)
      6 Steps to a Great Tan…

1) Hop in the shower and exfoliate and shave.

2) Dry yourself off and apply your regular moisturizer on your elbows, knees, heels and between your fingers and toes and in the beds of your nails.

3) Apply Clinique Self-Sun like you would a moisturizer (including your face, trust me…otherwise you will end up with a white face and tan body!). Go light on your hands and feet!

4) Wash the palms of your hands, take your towel and dry your hands…then rub the damp towel on the area between your fingers, beds of your nails and your inner wrist.

5) Walk around in the buff for about 5 minutes, and avoid light clothes for about an hour or so.

* To help your tan to last longer, don’t exfoliate until you’re ready to make another application and use oil free moisturizer.

*Listen up: Some products claim NOT to turn you orange-- they are lying. The chemical that causes your skin to change color is DHA, which chemically is a rust-like color. It is the amount of DHA in the product that makes the difference between a lovely glow and a horrible mistake.

A few times in your life you have a life altering experience and yesterday I was lucky enough to have one over a makeover. I have had many many makeovers in my life and each time I imagine I will finally have all the beauty secrets to make me as beautiful as I can possibly be. But they always fall short and I always end up with the same conclusion, "I can do my own makeup better than this". But that was before Edgar at the Jose Eber Atelier on Two Rodeo. A total master make up artist to the stars (in fact, a celebrity client showed up after my appointment but I was sworn to not divulge), he transformed my face like I could never imagine. He did things I wouldn't dare risk on my face, mostly my eyes. Well, it is all about the eyes right? Here are some of his tricks and tips as well as his favorite products:
      Full Moon Eyes

For Asian eyes, Edgar says that you must make a full moon with the shadow, meaning, the entire lid must be covered rather than the "shark fin" coverage where the ends of the eyes get more shadow. This will make the eyes rounder and thus appear larger.

Do Not Extend the Liner

One mistake most people make with their eyeliner is to extend it past your eyes, like cat eyes. Again, for Asian eyes (sorry, yes for the rest of this story it will all be focused on Asian eyes because, well, I'm Asian) this will make the eyes appear smaller. The idea is to make the eyes rounder and by extending the liner you are actually making the eyes more almond shaped.

Blend Blend BLEND!

Yes, I am a true believer in blending, I have various brushes for this technique but I never blend my eyeliner and I got a hand slapping from Edgar for this! Tight eyeliner makes you look old and tough (mean and harsh, not leathery tough). Use a small tightly bound brush for this and loosen the line without getting it too smudgy and smokey. Also, another helpful hint, always use a lighter liner to line under the eye. So black on top and expressso on the bottom for a softer more natural look.

Foundation Last

Do your eye make up first, not your foundation. Start by swiping a whopping glob of loose powder under your eyes. This will catch all the shadow that will undoubtedly fall under your eyes. Once you are done with your eyes, the powder and all the dark shadow droppings will clean off easily. If you do your foundation first, all this darkness will adhere to the foundation, leaving you with dark circles under your eye. To clean it up properly, you will need to remove the foundation and start over anyway, so why not just do it last! Totally makes sense.

Wet Sponge

Use Evian mineral water spray (or any other mineral water) to dampen your sponge before applying the foundation. It will keep the foundation on longer and the smooth application will give you an even coat so you don't look powdery and cakey. Once you apply the foundation, which has pigment, do not apply powder with more pigment. This will build up on your skin and make you look like you have too much make up on. Use a translucent powder with no pigments (like the Laura Mercier) for touch ups.

So of course I had to ask Edgar what his favorite products were and without hesitation he listed off the following:

Revitalash

I have found this to be true, you can never have too much money or too much eyelashes (you can in fact be too thin). Even those with ridiculously long lashes use mascara and endeavor to grow longer lashes. Well, for those of us who really need it, Edgar highly recommends Revitalsh, a lash conditioner that will make your lashes grow. He says that after a month the results will astound and excite you! It is pricey at $150 but we got a deal with Cooper Spa to give free shipping by mentioning "Beauty Snob" with your order (but you must call them 214-383-1010).

YSL Everlong Mascara

Like I said, you cannot have too much lashes and this YSL mascara not only coats your existing lashes to extend them beyond belief, it also contains a conditioning ingredient that will help them grow longer and fuller. Hey, I will double up and triple up on my lashes, there is no limit! Yves Saint Laurent Beauty at Saks Fifth Avenue for $27.50.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder

As mentioned earlier, don't pile pigment on top of pigment with your powder. The
<a target=_"blank" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=9RQByRmBmGU&offerid=99622.870634&type=2&subid=0" >Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder in translucent is the way to go to keep the shine at bay. $34 at Sephora.

CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-lasting Eyeliner

Edgar used black eyeliner and blended it with expresso shadow to create a bold look for me. He loves the Chanel liner for it's ease of blending and the long wear. The twist pencil also reduces his messes at client's houses and we can definitely appreciate that at our own houses. Chanel at Saks Fifth Avenue for $26.50.

The number one question sent to me from beauty snobs of all ages is-- "How do I age gracefully"? Take a stroll through Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills or Bergdorf Goodman in NYC and you will see how NOT to do so from women who flaunt their latest scars from face lifts, brow lifts, etc. It appears having plastic surgery that looks obvious is the new status symbol, bizarre right? Puzzling as it may be, it's the "designer" plastic surgery syndrome-- women who want you to know they spent a lot of dough on their faces. Kind of like carrying an expensive bag, except it's your face. I am not judging those who do it, I mean lord knows what I'll be doing when I turn 50 but I am just saying, why not make some simple changes now to prevent drastic measures later!?!?

With that in mind, we are starting our new weekly column. The Art of Aging Gracefully. We will address issues for women in their 20's, 30's, 40's and beyond. We'd also love for you to participate by giving us your anti-aging tips in comments!

Remember, you don't want to look like this, EVER. Instead, you should strive to look like this in your 70's. But until then, you can follow our Aging Gracefully tips and learn to make the most of the changes to your face and body that will inevitably occur! Jump to see our tips of the week!

I'm curious, what are your thoughts on plastic surgery?

As we get older, two components of our skin--collagen and elastin--degenerate, setting the stage for the appearance of wrinkles, creases, folds, and furrows. The breakdown of these components, accelerated by sun exposure and gravity, results in the sagging skin of old age. If you take care of your skin, however, you will minimize these effects. Here are a few tips to try this month. Just by altering you lifestyle a tiny bit, you will notice a difference!!!

For All Ages:

H2O:
First thing each morning, on an empty stomach, drink 16 ounces of room temperature water. I've been doing this since I was 20 years old (as taught to me by my grandmother who has never had a single procedure done, yet looks amazing at 95 years old!) Throughout the day, drink at least six more 8oz glasses of water (or three more 16 oz). You may add lemon or a splash of pure cranberry juice. Water will make your skin more supple and when skin is properly hydrated, wrinkles are less apparent.

MOISTURIZE:

Did you know that your body absorbs moisturizers better at night? Buy the best night cream your budget allows. You can go cheaper on a day cream as long as you use adequate sunscreen. But your night cream should be the best you can afford! Here are a few creams for different budgets that I like:

Low- Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream $23.99

Moderate- Prescriptives Good In Bed. $65

Moderate/High- Fresh Repair and Restore. $95

High- Darphin Predermine Anti-wrinkle Cream. $175

Luxury-
Natura Bisse Diamond Extreme Cream $318
Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Cream. $420

SUNSCREEN
I know you know that you need sunscreen but do you know how much sunscreen you need? Minimum of SPF 30 daily and apply at least a shot glass full. Slather all over your face, neck, chest and hands, and you're good to go! My favorite sunscreen is Skinceuticals 30 or 45 spf. Or call Cooper Spa to order-- 214-383-1030, free shipping if you mention Beauty Snob!

YOGA
Well toned skin attaches to the muscle better and will look more supple and youthful, not saggy. Plus yoga relaxes and de-stresses, did you know a stressed out person ages faster because the body's defense mechanism goes into overdrive and sucks the moisture out of the skin, making it look dry and wrinkly? How scary, right?

EAT WELL!
Do not diet, ever. Because diets don't work. Adapting a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits are the only way to maintain your weight and your youth. It's simple, each time you diet, you lose the weight but will most likely gain it back when you stop the diet. This causes your skin to loosen over time and sag. I have never been on a diet in my life (mostly because I love food and can eat linebackers under the table) but I have seen the toll it takes on friends who are yo yo dieters and trust me, it's not a pretty sight. Take it from Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the man who invented aerobics and spearheaded preventive health care. 70% healthy, 30% fun foods-- all in moderation. Basically, don't deny yourself if you want that piece of chocolate cake, but don't over indulge either! Eat a small piece to satisfy the sweet tooth but eat healthy the next two or three days. For the very thin and gaunt with wrinkly faces, sometimes gaining a few pounds is better than botox or restylane!

Try these tips and let me know how you feel!!!

11.7 COSMETIC PROCEDURES IN 2007
American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports 8% increase in surgical procedures January 3, 2000

NEW YORK, NY (February 25, 2008) – Nearly 11.7 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2007, according to statistics released today by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The Aesthetic Society, which has been collecting multi-specialty procedural statistics since 1997 says the overall number of cosmetic procedures has increased 457 percent since the collection of the statistics first began. The most frequently performed procedure was Botox injections and the most popular surgical procedure was liposuction.

"Our statistics confirm that aesthetic plastic surgery is not defined by race or gender," said Aesthetic Society president Foad Nahai, MD. "The number of surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed on men increased 17 percent since last year, and 22 percent of the aesthetic procedures were performed on traditional racial and ethnic minorities."
