Celebrity Esthetician, Renée Rouleau Shares Three Characteristics of a Youthful Face

Some factors that determine how you will age are health, lifestyle and anti-aging measures (like sun protection) you practice. As a skin care expert and esthetician with 25 years of hands on experience, I have seen a lot of faces and have observed three genetic facial features that if you’re lucky enough to possess, will make you look younger, longer.

1. A full volume face. If you are prone to gaining weight in the face, this means that you have an increased number of fat cells (pads) in your skin. As you age, you lose that plumpness in your skin which is why so many people have cosmetic injections to bring back the fullness. But if you have more fat cells, the loss of some of these cells will not be as evident so you will still have a youthful appearance. Asians generally have fuller faces, which is why they age so well. In fact, while I was live tweeting during The Golden Globe Awards show recently, my winner for best skin of the night was Lucy Liu. She looks so much younger than her age because she still has good volume in her face and her makeup that night only enhanced her natural glow. I have given facials to Bag Snob Kelly and she is aging well due to nice volume in her face.

2. A strong, firm neckline. Often, the first area to lose its tone and show signs of sagging is the neck and this indicates an aging skin. So if you’re in your 40s and 50s and still have a nice tight neckline, you are definitely aging well. I encourage my clients to take care of this area by using sun protection daily, and exfoliating and moisturizing regularly. Consider your neck an extension of your face and care for it the same way. Good practices will help with anti-aging in this area. I also recommend using serums and creams with ingredients such as peptides to encourage a firmer look.

3. High cheekbones. This characteristic is guaranteed to make you appear younger (as long as it is combined with good, healthy skin). Nice, high prominent cheekbones means that the skin in your face will not lose much tone as you age because the cheekbones will prevent your skin from dropping as quickly as those without high cheekbones. I gave Bag Snob Tina a facial just last month and she has these incredibly gorgeous cheekbones, which is why she looks so young and fabulous!

In addition to what you were given genetically, you can still affect how your skin ages by caring for it properly. Faithfully practice anti-aging techniques like using sunscreen 365 days a year. If your skin is sensitive choose a chemical-free, all-mineral sunblock like Age Defense Moisturizer SPF 30 ($36.50 on Renée Rouleau). Be sure to follow a good skin care routine formulated for your skin type, eat a healthy, well-balanced diet loaded with fruits and vegetables, get plenty of beauty rest, manage stress and get professional skin treatments for an additional skin boost.

Renée Rouleau is a skin care expert & celebrity esthetician who believes there’s more to skin than the one-size-fits-all approach. Her exclusive skin care line is based on nine unique skin types, rather than the standard–dry, normal and oily. Her skin care products, Dallas skin care spas and her LA and NY pop-up spas attract a celebrity clientele which includes Demi Lovato, Anna Faris and Eva Amurri.
