Long Hair: Long Story Short

Is there anything more lustrously feminine than long, flowing hair? The answer is, it all depends. I’m a long-hair addict myself, but I try to keep my hair above or at my back bra strap – anything longer and you have to be careful. Yes, age no longer dictates hair length (there are no rules, as long as your hair is healthy and maintained), but sometimes, you need a bit of defining, face-framing layers so your aging face doesn’t appear saggier than it already is. Or, so your hair doesn’t hang lank and lifeless.

Youth may be fleeting, but long hair is forever – at least, these ladies believe it to be. Like China Chow, who is so gorgeous she could shave her head and still look amazing. But how do you like her new Rapunzel-long locks? Similarly, Elle MacPherson, who, as we know all too well, is six-feet tall with an insane body, can grow her hair down to her ankles if she wants to. I am obsessed with her beachy waves!

Then there’s Kyle Richards, of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” I have to thank my eleven-year-old goddaughter for introducing me to the crazy show over Thanksgiving week – I’ve avoided any TV shows with the word “real” in the title for years, but I have to say, these women are bizarrely entertaining. So is Kyle’s hair; she can’t seem to decide between long or short. Her odd, lopped-off side layers have nothing to do with her waist-length sheet of hair.

Nicole Kidman has basically had the same haircut for twenty years, but she keeps it fresh by changing the texture from wavy to curly to straight and finely into refined updos. Finally, Sofia Vergara: layered and tousled with bombshell finesse worthy of her figure, she is my hair idol. This is lengthy perfection.

Tell us your take! What do you think of waist length hair for women who have graduated college?

  1. Agreed about Kyle Richards hair. Long hair is sexy and can give mature women a youthful look. Kyle has beautiful hair but it’s a bit heavy looking.
