Weird Gadget: Tongue Scrapers
supersmile_tongue_cleaner.jpg

I am obsessed with brushing my tongue but just found out you’re actually re-distributing tongue germs to teeth and gums.  Serious EWWWWWW.  A better way to clean the tongue is with this super weird but actually worthwhile product: Supersmile Tongue Cleaners.  These ripple-edged tongue cleaners provide seriously fresh breath. You have to bend a cleaner into a “U” shape and scrape your tongue with the rippled side, removing all of the odor-causing bacteria and ickyness that have been hibernating on your tongue. Do this after you brush and floss in the morning and expect a day of fresh breath.

While “scraping” your tongue may not sound as appealing as brushing, it’s actually a lot healthier for your mouth. Available at shop.supersmile.com. Celeb fans of Supersmile include Kelly Ripa, Justin Timberlake, J Lo, and Johnny Depp (and we all know he’s SUPER kissable).

I can also suggest Breath Rx kit that includes a tongue spray and two scrapers ($10 in drugstore.com). The scrapers are so good, you would never go back to brushing your tongue with a toothbrush again. They are also easy to carry around or keep in the office.

The scrapers have two cleaning sides – “regular” and “softer”, for individual preference. Small advice for many people who get a gag reflex while scraping their tongues: try making an “aaaa” sound as you scrap. It helps. :)

I’ve been using a scraper all my life…I’m pretty all indians have been using these forever. I always thought it was a little strange that they weren’t a normal part of american dental hygiene.

  4. Very neat idea! This is definitely a less glamourous part of a health and beauty routine, but also definitely necessary. Thanks for the info.

  5. I’ve never used a tongue scrapper but I really want to try those. I love that they come in all different colors.
