Frugal Snob: Drugstore Deal-- Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse

user-pic
maybellinedreamliquidmousse.jpgWant perfect looking skin without spending a fortune? Maybelline's Dream Liquid Mousse Airbrush Finish is damn near perfect! I never would have even given this a thought had I not seen it on my friend Melinda. She had just arrived home from Florida and I thought her glow was due to the fresh ocean air and being outdoors but she informed me it rained the entire trip and she didn't get to spend much time in the sun. I asked her why she was glowing and she gleefully told me "it's the new Maybelline foundation! I bought it because the model in the ad looked so good" (note to advertisers, your expensive models are paying off!). Now my friend is a very advanced Beauty Snob-- she is a hard core beauty junkie (her monthly Neiman bill can attest to this) and she does not hesitate to spend thousands of dollars on a jar of cream if she likes it. So I was shocked to hear she bought a bottle of $9 foundation and even more shocked to find out that she uses it more often than her $150 bottle of cream foundation!

Of course I had to investigate even though I had my doubts and fear (will the cheap foundation make me break out? will the color match? and how will I know what color to choose since there are no samples?). I ended up buying Nude beige in 3.5-- it looked most neutral in the bottle. I went home and washed my face and applied without much expectation.  The minute I pumped the first drop, however, I knew this was good stuff.  The consistency is smooth and lightweight (I didn't even need to blend with moisturizer!) and it left the most amazing velvety texture. I am not saying I'll replace my Chanel, Chantecaille or Cle de peau cream foundations but let me just say this is one heck of a foundation for the price point! I even used it on my photo shoot in LA last week. Jump to see photo--

Sorry for the scary close up shot but this has not been touched up at all (as you can see with my bloodshot eyes, someone help me photo shop please!). All I used was the Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse. 3.5 Nude beige baby! laphotoshoot.jpg

  • Tina-your skin looks terrific!

  • Running to Duane Reade right now to buy! Can't wait

  • That second photo is absolutely fab!

  • Holy crap! Drugstore foundations are finally getting better, huh? I've been using the Cover Girl/Olay Simply Ageless foundation and I'm in love. I'll definitely have to give Maybelline another shot (I have a bad history with them -.-;;)!

  • Tina, what blush do you use? I like the color on you (: I'm tempted to try this foundation too..

  • Tina, you look gorgeous!
    xoxo

  • Hi Lesley,

I used Bobbi Brown's Pink shimmer blush as a base color and popped off with her Pale Pink blush on the apple of my cheeks :)

    Thanks, Julie! xoxo

  • Hey, is this acne causing? Because I'm 15 and have acne prone skin.

    • Hi Bella,
I don't have any problems with it causing acne but then again, I am a long way from being 15.

It's worth a try and you only need a little bit, it goes on smoothly and will give a very even and sheer coverage. Let me know how it works for you!

    • Bella, I know this is like 2 weeks old, but I too have acne-prone skin and I found something that might work well for you. Neutrogena makes a foundation now with salicylic acid right in it (you know, the stuff that's in blemish cream and lots of acne face wash). It's called "SkinClearing oil-free makeup" and it's about $13 at drugstores. Why the weird name with no space? No idea. But it gives nice coverage, feels really light, and I haven't had a breakout in weeks. And no, I don't work for them, haha. Hope this helps!

Tina, 1st time commenter but I'm a big fan, you and Kelly have such a great blog!

  • Tina, I'm definitely trying this makeup. Another really good drugstore brand is Covergirl AquaSmooth Makeup .It is really amazing. I use Chanecaille, Laura Mercier, but usually get the compliments with the Covergirl.

  • Wow, your skin truly does look flawless.

I gotta try this stuff! I'm in the market for a new foundation and your photos have me SOLD!

  • I bought MDLM Thursday, wore it for the first time Friday & I absolutely love it!!!

The thing that attracted me to the Mousse was the "airbrush" part. What girl doesn't want to look like her skin has been airbrushed? It went to really smooth & the price is definitely right. So glad I tried it!

  • You look very pretty

  • Tina,
I really have to say this: You are gorgeous and your skin is absolutely flawless!

  • Tina,

  • I have to say that yes, this foundation gives almost perfect coverage but I have dry skin and this foundation leaves me with awful pimples - which I never get!! :o(

It's been binned and replaced with Maybelline Mineral Power Foundation. Same coverage, but much lighter and OIL FREE!

  • Ditto with what Amanda said. After a week of using, and getting tons of compliments on my complexion, I woke up today with a terrible breakout on my cheeks. My cheeks! Not even an oily part of my face. I have not had a break out this bad since I was in high school (I'm 27.) This is the only thing that I have changed in my beauty regime, so I returned it today.
