Beauty Debate: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick vs. Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc

I’ll admit it, I’m biased towards Bobbi Brown products– I’ve been a devoted fan since my first beige lipstick in college but this entry is not about which brand I prefer– it’s a debate about which came first and which is better. Laura Mercier has a strong following and reputation of her own so I’m sure she’ll have plenty of defenders here for her Shimmer Bloc. But seriously, isn’t it a bit too conveniently similar in name and function to Bobbi’s Shimmer Brick? Okay, so brick and bloc aren’t exactly identical but it has the same meaning. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of Laura Mercier in my make up drawer but I’m just curious to why she didn’t name hers something less similar than Bobbi’s. I’ve tried both and find Mercier’s Bloc a bit too frosty. I prefer the Bricks because there are varying degrees of color and you can control the shades better.  At the risk of sounding like a snob, I also find the Shimmer Brick to be more chic looking, too.  What about you? Which do you prefer and why?

  1. I have never met Bobbi or Laura but love watching Bobbi on the Today show. she always seems so calm and centered. I like Mercier products but this shimmer bloc is not my fave. Bobbi’s shimmer brick in Bronze last summer and I love it. But the best Bobbi product ever is the Beach shower gel!

  2. I’ve been noticing recently that it seems like Laura Mercier products are copying BB. Have you noticed that Laura now has a custom palette that looks just like BB 6 pan custom palette and her Secret concealer is in a container just like BB with the powder on the bottom. I too like Laura Mercier products a lot, but this just seems too much like copying.

Laura mercier is SO copying Bobbi brown! Are they both owned by Estee Lauder?

  4. Nope, LVMH owns Laura Mercier and Estee owns Boobi. It’s good to see these two side by side, though! I just purchased the Platinum Pink Brick, but I’ve been eying the Garden Shimmer Bloc as well….decisions!

  5. I think the Laura Mercier’s looking like BB’s might be a marketing ploy. Perhaps to stir up competition similarly in the way that gas stations position themselves across from each other. I do tend to sway toward the brick, though. You can get day and night looks out of a brick whereas a bloc is just one big, well, block of color.

Shimmer bricks for me. I’ve never tried the shimmer bloc but after reading everyone’s post I won’t waste my money. Had the bronze brick last year too, can’t wait to try the pink platinum

  7. Bobbi has long been a trend setter in the beauty industry. The copy cats further establish her as the best of the bunch!

  8. I am both a Bobbi Brown and Laura mercier fan. Is this true about Mercier copying Bobbi’s best sellers instead of creating her own? That’s a shame but good marketing ploy on Mercier’s part.

I have met Bobbi Brown at the North Park Neiman Marcus. It was a hudge make up event. That was four years ago and I have been a BB convert ever since. I just added the Platinum Pink shimmer brick to my spring make up. I love it.

  13. Laura Mercier’s looks pretty but not sure if it works. I thought Estee Lauder has something similar looking too?

Bobbi Brown & Laura Mercier have split a 90% share of my make up. However, I have quit buying Laura Mercier. I’m sorry, but in the make-up/fashion industry being a copy-cat is not a good marketing ploy as some have said. It’s basically admitting that the other has better products, is more innovative, and more creative than you are. I noticed it a while back – that as soon as BB come out with something new – it would pop up over at LM. Why doesn’t LM just come out and say Bobbi is better than I am, but don’t worry I’ll have the same thing as her soon. It’s pathetic. Those who can’t lead, follow. I perfer to give credit (and my money) where it’s due. It’s sad, I think LM is talented, it just seems she run out of ideas.
