I once cut my hair in a short bob. I say once because it was one of most traumatic experiences of my life; one that I have yet to repeat. I had waist length hair as girls did in the late '90s and one day I decided to chop it all off, one length, to the chin. Big mistake. I have a round face and without any layers I looked like a bloated dumpling. Everything was kind of a blur but I remember bursting into tears, called my 5 BFFs who showed up within minutes (we lived in Taipei and everything was about a 5 minute cab ride) and took me to the nearest restaurant so I could have a drink and be sedated. I also remember sobbing "No one is ever going to marry me, I am the most hideous thing alive". Gee, the vanity of youth! Apparently someone did want to marry me and I survived after all. Heidi Klum just did the same with her long locks but she is so gorgeous she'd look good bald. What do you guys think of her new bob? Snob or Slob? And what was your worst hair experience? Talk to me snobs!

Total snob. But you are right, she would look good even if she were bald!
I love short hair in theory, but it can be traumatic! I am glad you came through in the end. My worst hair experience was also in high school, when everyone started highlighting their hair. And by everyone I mean girls with light brown to blond hair.
Not wanting to be left out on the crazy 9th grade fad, I also had my hair highlighted. I am a dark, dark brunette, and I guess I also have red undertones because my hair turned BRIGHT ORANGE. I looked like I tried to make my head have tiger stripes. I cried like crazy to my mom, who was secretly trying not to laugh that's how funny my hair looked, and we set up an appointment to have my hair dyed back, although I did have to go to school for a whole day with the tiger-hair. Sigh.
I would say SNOB. It's a good looking bob and not too short. My worst experience was years ago , I had my long hair cut into a shag like cut. Oh, what a mistake. My coarse , thick hair just laid there unless I did a lot of styling. It was so blah, but finally grew out, taking forever with the layers. I did it two weeks before my first trip to France!!
My bob comes tomorrow. I was jittery enough, but after six years of length it's time for a change, right?...right?
Bobbi, the great thing about hair is that it grows back. I always hate a new hairstyle or cut the day after I get it, and by the end of the week I've adjusted. I'm sure it'll work out.
And Heidi looks awesome. :) It's vey age appropriate without being old. She looks sophisticated.
I LOVE IT!! YES she would look HOT even bald!!!
Forgot to tell you my traumatizing experience with my hur!!
About 3 years ago or so, was sitting at the chair, my guy just about finished with me, decided to venture towards my forehead and gave me bangs, OMG!! are you kidding me? I almost DIED!! I was on my cell, wasnt paying attention (my fault) but shit been going to him for years and years!!! he knows, I DONT do bangs, I have curly hur that I always blow dry straight, so no bangs for me!! plus I look 12 with bangs...I cried all the way home!!!! and to top it off, I was going to a dinner party that evening, lucky for him my hur grows like a chi-a-pet!!!
PS...wait till I see him next week, gonna yell at him again for that day!!! hee hee!!
Heidi looks totally snob!
My worst haircut: the lady cut it a little long in the front and shorter in the back, and I didn't like it..so I had her straighten it out. In order to do that, she had to cut my hair literally up to my ears. I looked like a boy for..oh..FOREVER! I am still trying to grow my hair out after 2 years. I actually really do like short hair due to its manageability..but wedding bells calls for longer hair for me
She look absolutely gorgeous... Love this edgy look on her!
When I went to the UK, I went to the flagship Vidal Sassoon store for a haircut and ended up looking like a military kid! (yes, I'm male) The woman buzzed cut and made me look like a too-young punk! I remember stumbling out of the salon, pissed, and having to go to this Japanese hair salon to rectify the problem, only to get told that I should get my hair coloured - which I did... The funky ash gray did make it look a LOT better. I have never stepped back to that Vidal Sassoon, ever. I think asians cut asian hair best, still...
You said it sister!
Asians cut Asian hair best, but only the Asians in Asia-- who have had more practice and training with Asian hair.
I've gone to American-Asians who've only cut Caucasian hair and they are not as well trained in cutting stubborn Asian hair!
This reminds me I need to go see Kevin in LA........... my Asian hair guru...
What's special about Asian hair? Why is it so hard to cut?
Hi Tina,
Where do you get your hair cut in Taipei? I'm heading back there this Christmas and won't have a chance to cut my hair here in the States before going back. I'd love any recommendations you have! Thanks!
love love love heidi's new haircut. as for my horror stories (notice the plural)...the first one was when i was a sophomore in high school (yup, we are going that far back). my regular hair stylist was on maternity leave, and they had somebody else covering her clients. well. i decided to try this "other stylist" out. she cut my hair so that it was right below my ears, and because of the way my hairline in the back is, shaped the back with this little tail like thing. i looked AWFUL. and of course, as i was growing it back out...i had to be wary of the rat tail!!!!
the second was a little more recent, and a little bit my fault. i had chopped off my long hair into a pixie cut, which i loved. and when it came time to fix it up, i was so annoyed at how many times i would have to go get it trimmed that i asked if there was anything we could do about it. next thing i know, my pixie cut is a little bit too short.
mq, cb: Asian hair is much coarser and less dense than caucasian hair - which makes it much more stubborn and harder to achieve a specific shape/style. Also, asian hair grows quicker than caucasian hair, which poses a challenge to see if the cut to grows out well or not.
I used to live in Japan, and had one of the best haircuts of my life there - male hairdresser who was so precise it was amazing....always stayed away from colour though - I didn't think my caucasian hair would react well. He told me that the big difference between Asian hair and Caucasian hair is how it reacts when it gets wet. Apparently Asian stretches a lot less when it's wet which means that you can cut a very straight, precise line more easily if you know what you're doing
I love this cut on Heidi. It's not too bob-y and harsh ala Posh or Anna Wintour, so perhaps a gal with rounder face can wear it too.
As for my most traumatic experience, this too, happened when my normal stylist went on maternity leave.
OK, twice it occurred, 2 different stylists, both during my stylist's maternity leave.
I went to my stylist's former assistant, who by then was a full blown stylist herself, to get my hair colored. The coloring part was fine, since she used to mix the colors and apply the dye for me as an assistant. Since my bangs were growing out, I asked her if she could trim it. Biggest mistake ever! The bangs were LOPSIDED and FLAT. There was NO texture to it at all, and it was lopsided. O M G. Everytime I held a pair of scissors, I had to suppress the urge to cut my own bangs.
After that experience, I decided to visit a stylist recommended by 1 of the counter managers at Nordstroms. I love how her hair looked, and I wanted something similar to it. Layers, flippy, and youthful.
First, the cut took forever. My bums were started to cramp from sitting there, but whatever, she's just trying to do a good job. The end result however? Yes, she cut off a lot in length, but my hair felt really heavy. The bangs? She flat ironed my bangs first, even after I told her that I didn't flat iron or own a flat iron, and she proceeded to cut them to a length that ended up 1/2 way between my eyebrows and my hairline. I looked like a retarded Asian boy with shaggy bangs my Asian mom had cut with dull scissors! I ended up pulling my bangs back with clips for weeks. Normally, my hair grows really fast, but for some reason, my hair refused to grow at its normal speed, and I had to wait forever to get it fixed. I ended up going to a Japanese salon near my house for Ken to fix it.
Thank goodness my stylist is back from maternity leave. She's Asian-American, so although she's trained to cut Caucasian hair, she's great with Asian hair too. If your interested Tina, I can give you her info so you can visit her during your next LA visit.
awesome hair cut on heidi..and i have the exact one too!
I think honestly, you need a beautiful face, graceful neck, and great hair to pull off a bob. But when you can, AMAZING!
