When I was first learning about makeup and beauty secrets in middle school I was petrified of eyelash curlers. They seemed like these medieval devices and I was sure if I waited long enough someone would find a better way to curl eyelashes. Also, sometimes I wear glasses and I naively thought that if my eyelashes were hidden behind some cute frames, no one would notice their deficiencies. The older I got, the more resigned I got to the fact that I would have to use and eyelash curler someday. (And to the fact that as much as I loved my glasses, contacts look way better at fancy events) Pure mascara alone wasn’t doing the trick. My esthetician at the time suggested Shu Uemura for a quality eyelash curler and once I got used to using it, I was hooked! It’s totally gentle and curls eyelashes without clamping down to hard like some curlers can. It’s really durable as well. Mine has been thrown in makeup bags and tossed around for a long time now and hasn’t suffered at all. Plus, it’s totally affordable - $18 at Sephora. Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
Beauty Snob Tina note: I completely agree! I have used this since college (not the same one :) and it is still my favorite eyelash curler. I've tried many others and none compare to the natural curl Shu Uemura gives!.

My fav is Kevyn Aucoin's version.
i also have the shu uemura curler and i love love love it!! question: where can i get replacement pads for them? do sephora stores carry them?
I have the same pair and they are by far the best but, like Cinthia, can't find replacement pads for them at all. I tried Sephora the last time I was in the US but without any luck.
I did try those self-heating curlers once but they weren't very robust. I broke them on about the 10th go and I'm not even sure how. They didn't give such a good curl either.
i have the same curlers and the replacement pads can be bought at the shu umera store. I have to ask though, how long do you crimp your lashes for? I use these curlers and i don't really see its effectiveness (my lashes just become poker straight again by the time i finish with my eye shadow and liner and putting on the masacara doesn't seem to make it any better) or is it just my crappy lashes? sigh...
