The Fit Flop: Snob or Slob?
By Beauty Snob Tina
July 25, 2007

fitflop.jpg Can walking in a pair of Fit Flops really lead you to slim thighs and a smaller derriere? After I gave birth I bought a pair of the much hyped MBT Masai sneakers, I lost my baby weight and was back in my size 25 jeans within weeks but I have no idea if it was from the sneakers or because I would walk 5 miles a day just to justify a pair of $250 sneakers. All I know is I got a sore back from the weight of those heavy shoes so I stopped wearing them. Now the Fit Flop has come on the scene and are making similar claims but I have my doubts. Here is what they claim:

1. Improves muscle tone (I think any kind of exercise can do that, like walking.)

2. Increases muscle activity and circulation (Again, nothing that a good ol’ brisk walk won’t do)

3. Improves balance and posture (That will happen when you stop wearing 5 inch stilettos anyway)

4. Burns calories (Uh, don’t you burn calories just sitting at home typing on a computer like I am right now?

pBBW1-3735432v194.jpgThis is not something I want to try mainly because I abhor flip flops and think they are only appropriate for the park, pool/beach or spa (and running errands if you are mostly in your car, that’s borderline acceptable). Maybe it is because I no longer live in LA where I used to live in my Havana flip flops but nothing grates on me more than sloppy women at the mall or airport in flip flops! Anyway, I predict this is all hype but may try it just to prove my point. What do I have to lose except looking stupid right? And really, none of these colors go with any of my birkins. What do you beauty snobbers think? Will you try these Fit Flops? $45 at Bath and Body Works.

Despite all the bs about its benefits, the flip flops are cute!

    I think I have almost every style of flip flop, I love them because I hate for my feet to feel all restricted, also it’s the best way to show off my pedicure :}

I’ve been wearing them for about a month now and I do notice a difference. I’m a walker anyway, however- with these on I feel a tightening in my butt and legs while walking. I advise wearing them for only 30 minutes at a time for the first week or so.

My legs and butt appear to be showing the toning already. Very pleased.

Sort of like a glorified Dr. Scholl from the old days, most of the work occurs by scrunching the toe part of the shoe while walking. They are far more comfortable than Dr. Scholl’s and a whole lot cuter, too!

    I say SLOB

It looks like they might give your foot more support than the majority of flip flops, but if you’re REALLY trying to walk around and tone your legs just grab your running shoes and walk/run your little heart out.

I have to agree with your comments I’m pretty sure you’ll burn some calories walking a mile in any shoe.

i don’t even think the flip flops are that cute.

seems like the same thing as that flavored borba (or something like that) water for your skin. just attach some worthless product to something already necessary for a healthy lifestyle, that you should be doing anyway.

I just bought a pair because I live in the south and we wear flipflops practically year-round. I wore them for like 20 minutes yesterday, and then today noticed my bum muscles were a bit sore–they seem to be working already. I had to buy a size smaller than I normally wear because my normal size was a bit too floppy when I tried on. They’re chunkier than flipflops I usually buy but at least they’re not as hideous as those MBT shoes.

I am always amused (but never surprised) by the vehemence of the people who have never had a foot anywhere near these shoes, but who are sure that they are hopelessly overhyped and totally bogus. I have a pair. I walk about 50 city blocks a day in them (2.5 miles more or less). They are comfy, they are NOT totally ugly, and I absolutely believe they provide more of a “work out” than plain flip flops. I, too, feel it in my bum–and elsewhere. Will my legs ever look like those in the photo? Of course not. Not even with Photoshop. Are these helpful? I say yes, and besides, what do I have to lose by trying them? Would I buy them again? Sure.

    Agree with Edie.

    Have them in 3 colors!

Running shoes are too hot in the summer.

Got it as a gift. I felt a little off balance at first, but now I love it. I have been wearing it since Christmas and I think it has help me lose a few pounds. I feel like I have better posture.

I love my fit flops!! My mom bought them online and they were too small for her so I helped myself to them. I don’t have time to work out my legs and they have helped tighten and firm my legs and butt. I can even tell that it has helped with celulite!

I love these shoes! They are very comfy. I have abnormally high arches and these are the only shoe that keeps my feet pain free. I am a nurse and I am considering wearing these (with bootie covers) into work. I wish they made them in a covered toe! Definitely feel firmer too! Try them.

I have been wearing my fitflops for about two months. I love them!! I am like Sandy, I felt a little off balance at first. I don’t know what it was about this shoe that made me feel that way, but after about a week of wearing them I got my bearings. I am going to order another pair.

Been wearing the FitFlops for about a month. Bought them because they were supposedly “great for Plantar Fasciitis” which I have a persistent bad case of. They are more comfortable overall all day than walking in sneakers, but they have done absolutely nothing to improve my heel pain. I have noticed no leg soreness nor leg toning nor butt downsizing. I think they are a very overpriced made-in-China chunky flipflop.

I wanted to look stylish and not stand out as a tourist while traveling in Italy. So, I left my Nikes at home and brought 2 pairs of sandals, one of which was the sequin style Fit Flop. The other is a high end, cushy flip flop I’ve had for years. Mind you, we walked and even hiked about 6 miles a day. I wore the sequin Fit Flops for 2 weeks and they were great. We spent the last day getting in everything possible in Rome so, for a change of pace, I wore the other flip flops. My feet were very sore and 2 days later my shins started bothering me. I am now suffering from a full blown shin splint and it hurts to walk a few steps. I am very certain it was the last day that did me in. I should have worn the Fit Flops. By the way, i wore them hiking up a hillside to a road above the Cinque Terre and then out to dinner that night.

I think this shoe is the best invention ever. I am very picky about my shoes. They must have a leather sole, or they will never make their way into my closet. As for the Fitflop, I love them!! I have been a hairdresser for 17 years, and I also have 2 herniated disks. By the end of the day, my feet and back are usually killing me. Not with my Fitflops. They are slammin’

I am trying to find out about Fitflops. I have a seriously dropped arch which causes problems with walking and has also caused problems to my quad muscles which now need exercising to strenthen the quads and glutes. I am wondering if these Fitflops would help. There are so many opposite reviews it is difficult to make a decision as to whether to try some out, or not!

I bought the sequined fitflop 2 weeks ago and as a massage therapist am on my feet 8-12 hours a day. I found that they were comfortable and supporting to my fallen arches. Also being a little elevated over the table was a bonus. My feet and back were not sore as with wearing other footwear. They look cool and I think would be a great accessory to take on my next cruise. When I first tried them on I noticed some lift sensation in my butt. Bonus. I think I’ll get another pair a different colour.

Aren’t fitflops essentially the same as the Shape Ups trainers from Skechers?
