The softest skin you'll ever have

Today I’m going to let you guys in on a little secret. I very rarely buy my own exfoliator. Sometimes I’ll get attracted by shiny packaging or the rave reviews of friends, but when it comes down to it, the exfoliator that I whip up in my own kitchen is the one I keep coming back to! I take extra virgin olive oil, mix it with sugar and there you go, cheap and amazing exfoliator that keeps your skin super soft and works really well. There are a million variations on this recipe, but this is the one that I use. I’ve heard of people using salt instead of the sugar, or plain old cooking oil instead of extra virgin olive oil and I’m sure, depending on your skin type, different variations work for different people. The one thing I DON’T recommend trying on your skin is baking powder. A lot of home exfoliator recipes will tell you to try that, but it is way harsh to use, especially on your skin! So, if you’re feeling adventurous, whip up a batch in your kitchen and give it a try. Your skin will love you for it!

  • Is this good for acne prone skin, do you think?

  • Hi!

I'm not sure if this is good for acne prone skin or not. Personally I'd be wary of putting any oil on acne prone skin. If you're looking for a homemade solution try mixing a tablespoon of sugar or sea salt in with your regular face wash. That should work for exfoliating purposes.

  • do i have to wash with soap and water afterwards or just rinse with water ? thanks

  • I just tried this today and it works wonderful! I first used it on my face, and it felt so skin and wonderful. It was also sooo moisturizing with the olive oil. I had extra left which I wanted to finish to avoid contamination, so I hopped in the shower and scrubbed my arm, elbow, and legs. (I'm a microbio major, and once we were sent home with agar plates to leave out for 10 minutes to see what microbes are in your home, and yea.. let's just leave it to me being a contamination freak). I didn't even have to put on moisturizer afterwards!

Also, I have acne prone skin, and it doesn't seem to be doing anything bad. I will let you know tomorrow if I wake up with more pimples.

From my understanding, oil isn't horrible for acne skin either. Just be sure to rinse it off with warm water, and you'll be fine. Both my cousin and I swear by DHC's Deep Cleansing Oil, and we are both very acne proned. The cleansing oil definitely has helped us clear some of the yucky acne. :)

  • hi,came about this site as i tried to find answer to something on google, its a lovely site. i'll like to say i use sugar alone and it does wonders to my skin, after my bath, while my skin's still wet,i tale handfuls and exfoliate from face to feet, then rinse off and pat my body dry, then moisturise.
i also use Bicarb of Soda, NOT baking soda, mixing it with my body wash on a sponge. And this is very fantastic for my skin,i tell you. people cant believe my age, even at 37.
